Beautiful Italian Art Deco jewellery box, made in Sorrento in the 1920s or 30s. Lovely marquetry inlay to the lid and quilted satin lined interior. In complete original condition.

This is a beautiful Italian jewellery box, dating to the 1920s/30s. It was made in Sorrento and is in complete original condition.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid wood and has a beautiful lightly varnished veneer. It has lovely marquetry inlay on the lid, made from several varieties of colourful woods. These have created a beautiful coastal scene, probably depicting Sorrento which is where this box was made. Sorrento is a stunning coastal which overlooks the Bay of Naples.
There is a beautiful inlaid frame around the edges of the lid.
The box has a beautiful streamlined shape and lovely curved sides. It is complete with its original stop hinges which hold the lid upright.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment. The walls of the compartment are lined with satin and there is a padded and quilted satin panel in the base. All of this is original. The colour of the satin is pale blue.
There is a lovely inset mirror to the inside of the lid. This is surrounded by fine inlaid frames which have a painted blue finish. The inside of the lid is veneered.
Condition
This wonderful old box is in original condition. It is completely untouched with no restoration or refurbishment.
All of the inlay is present and intact. Some of the varnish to the veneer has worn thin, resulting in the wood looking slightly faded in a few areas. There is a fine split to the veneer on the back of the box which is hardly noticeable.
The interior satin has some age-related stains but is still neatly fitted and has no splits.
The mirror has some blemishes but no cracks or chips. It is still securely seated. There are some fine hairline cracks to the veneer around the mirror.
The minor flaws are as we'd expect on a box of this age which has been loved and used. The box would be ideal for those who prefer an honest naturally aged 'Shabby Chic' finish.
