This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box, handmade and signed by its craftsman. It dates to the 1970s/1980s and plays Beethoven's 'Fur Elise'. The box is quite large and has a good amount of storage space.

The Exterior

This box is made of a variety of solid hardwoods and has beautiful strips of inlay on all four sides. These are positioned in a stylish abstract fashion on the front and rear of the box.

The lid has a wonderful domed form with beautiful sloping curvature at the corners.

The box has high-quality retracting quadrant hinges and a stylish clasp closure. These are all made of solid brass.

The craftsman's initials 'ESM' and the woodworks firm's label are on the bottom of the box.

The Maker/Firm

This box was handmade by Eric S. Manger of Phoenix Wood Craft in East Yorkshire.

The Interior

The interior has a removable storage tray at the top and a single compartment beneath.

The tray has a single storage compartment with a nicely partitioned ring storage section to the left of it. There is a beautifully turned wood handle in the compartment which enables you to lift the tray out of the box with ease.

The musical movement is beautifully cased to the left of the lower storage compartment. There is further (shallower) storage space upon the top of the casing.

Both compartments plus the ring storage and casing, have their original soft plush velvet linings/coverings. The velvet is a beautiful deep violet shade.

The Musical Movement

The movement plays the beautiful classical tune 'Fur Elise' by Beethoven. This was composed in 1810 but was not published until 1867, 40 years after Beethoven's death.

The movement is in fair working order. The tune plays a little slow.

Operating the musical movement

The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Three turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.

Notes On Vintage Musical Movements

Care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning. We are not responsible for movements that are overwound or for movements which deteriorate from further age and use, once boxes are purchased.

Please check that the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

Please read our returns policy which includes our policy on musical movements.

Condition

This beautiful box is in very good condition. It is a solid weighty box with sound structure and very little wear.

All of the inlaid strips are present and intact, set beautifully flush into the wood.

All of the interior velvet linings are neatly fitted and in lovely clean condition. They have no splits or fraying.

The hinges are still in excellent working order and the clasp securely closes the box.

As mentioned above, the musical movement plays a little slow.
