Vintage 1950s Inlaid Italian Musical Jewellery Box

This is a beautiful inlaid musical jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy in the 1950s. It has a beautiful newly refurbished interior and is complete with its original working lock and key.

The Exterior

The lid has a beautiful marquetry inlaid scene featuring Italian dancers in traditional costume. This is surrounded by a frame of decorative inlay.

The sides have bands of decorative micro mosaic inlay which have created a three dimensional effect. They also have bands of mosaic chequered inlay. There is also a complementary wider band of mosaic chequered inlay to the front of the box.

The sides have a beautiful curved formation and the box stands raised on its original tapered wooden feet.

The box is complete with its original working lock, key and piano hinge.

About The Inlay

The micro mosaic inlay on this box is known as 'mosaic tesselated inlay'. It is made up of hundreds of tiny pieces of wood, painstakingly put together to form intricate mosaic designs.

The Interior

The interior has been newly refurbished by ourselves. It has a single storage compartment on the left, and the musical movement is beneath a ledge on the right. There is further shallow storage space upon the ledge.

The base of the compartment has a new royal blue premium velvet panel. This is padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery. The ledge to the right has a matching velvet covering.

All of the interior walls have new quality blue paper linings.

The inside of the lid has a printed floral paper panel with a frame of gold silk barley twist trim. The paper has been added to cover the lid's original damaged mirror.

The Musical Movement

The movement plays the beautiful Italian tune 'La Spagnola'. The English translation of this is 'The Spanish Girl'.

The original music was composed by Vincenzo Di Chiara in 1906. Lyrics were added later and the song has been recorded/performed by various artists including Mario Lanza in the 1950s.

Operating The Musical Movement

The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Four turns of the key are sufficient to wind up the musical movement. The movement is in good working order. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.

Notes About Locks And Musical Movements

As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.

We would like to make you aware that vintage locks and musical movements can occasionally malfunction. They are already very old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks or movements that malfunction from further age and use, once boxes are purchased. Please ensure the lock and movement are working as soon as you receive your box. They will be checked again prior to posting.

You can view our full returns policy which includes locks and movements, by visiting our Payments And Returns page.
