Superbly Inlaid Refurbished Satin Lined Antique Jewellery Box From Sorrento

FREE UK NEXT DAY DELIVERY. We Ship Worldwide.

This is a fabulous large antique Italian jewellery box with absolutely stunning inlaid decoration. It was made in Sorrento in the late 18th/early 19th century, circa 1890-1910. The interior has been beautifully refurbished with satin. The box is a superb rare example of Sorrento Ware.

The Exterior

This box is made of solid Olive Wood which has absolutely beautiful figuration. The lid has a stylish domed form and extremely decorative inlaid Swallows and flowers. 'Nous Reviendrons' is hand-painted between the Swallows. In English this translates to 'We will return/We will come back'. It is a lovely endearing term which likely relates to the famous Neapolitan song 'Come Back to Sorrento' ('Torna a Surriento'), composed in 1902 by the Italian musician Ernesto De Curtis, the words of which were written by his brother Giambattista. It has since been recorded/performed by multiple famous artists such as Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Luciana Pavarotti, to name just a few! The term also relates to 'coming back to Sorrento' as the box was made for the Sorrento tourist market, hence the beautifully hand-painted 'Souvenir' on the front of the box. The lettering of both 'Nous Reviendrons' and "Souvenir' is in extremely beautiful fancy script! There are also beautifully inlaid Swallows to the front of the box, as well as a lovely inlaid kite shaped escutcheon to the keyhole.

The bottom of the box has a soft black velour covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture. This is not original to the box, however it is a fairly old addition to the box.

Please note the lock is not functional and therefore has no key.

Further information relating to these old Sorrento boxes and their makers will be sent along with the box.

The Inlay

The inlay consists of several varieties of wood. It is set beautifully flush into the Olivewood. The inlaid flowers have a colourful stained finish.

The Swallow Symbolism

The Swallows on this box were most likely added to be symbolic. The Swallow has long represented the safe journey home of a loved one.

About Olive Wood

Olive wood has a distinctive grain and rich colour and characteristic brown and yellow streaks. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes.

Olive wood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density and it takes well to cutting and polishing.

The Olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem.

The Interior

The interior has a single large and deep compartment. It is deep enough to hold large pieces of jewellery such as broad bangles, watches and chunky beads, etc.

The compartment has been beautifully refurbished by our skilled box restorer. It has new bespoke made teal blue satin linings with the base panel being padded to provide cushioned protection for jewellery.

The figuration to the Olivewood to the inside of the lid is absolutely beautiful!

Condition

This wonderful old box is still in very good condition, depsite its 115-135 years of age! It has sound structure and no nasty cracks.

The hinges are still in good working order.

The interior satin linings, being new, are in immaculate condition.

All of the inlay is present and securely seated.

There is some minor light age related wear to the Olivewood. There are a few fine hairline cracks (secure) and a tiny piece of Olivewood missing to the rear left corner. A small piece of Olivewood has been professionally replaced at the front right corner of the box. These flaws are small and as we'd expect with such a very old box which has been loved and used. They in no way spoil the beautiful overall appearance of the box, rather they add to its charm and prove the box's authenticity.
