Superb Old Inlaid Jewellery Box With Antique Porcelain Plaque

This is a beautiful and most interesting old high-quality jewellery box. It has an antique 19th-century porcelain portrait plaque on the lid and a WW1/WW2 Major's Rank Insignia Crown Pip badge inside the lid. The body of the box has beautiful inlay and the interior is lined with velvet.

The Exterior

This box is made of solid beech wood and has a beautiful oval shape.

The body of the box has beautiful inlaid decoration which has a very decorative brick-like design. The inlay consists of varieties of Mahogany.

There is a beautiful mid-19th-century hand-painted miniature porcelain plaque on the lid. This is Italian and features a lovely portrait of an Italian peasant girl holding a basket of grapes. The plaque is secure within a metal bezel mount and is firmly attached to the lid.

The box is complete with its original hinge which holds the lid upright.

The bottom of the box has a soft felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.

The Interior

The interior compartment plus the inside of the lid have beautiful plush crushed velvet linings. These have a marbled deep brown/orangey-red russet colouring. The velvet panel to the base of the compartment is lightly padded. This provides cushioned protection for jewellery.

There is an old WW1/WW2 Major's Rank Insignia Crown Pip badge to the inside of the lid. This is made of brass and it still has its original woven red fabric backing.

The hinge is beautifully concealed by a taupe coloured suede-like covering.

This box is mid 20th C, dating to the 1940s or early 1950s.

The Insignia crown pip badge and porcelain plaque were likely added when the box was made and lined. It is probable that these items were added as mementoes for the original owner of the box, and they suggest connections with Italy and the British army.

This beautiful box is still in excellent condition. It has sound structure and only minor light wear, commensurate with age and honest use.

All of the inlay is still present and secure.

The interior linings are still clean and neatly fitted. They have no splits or fraying.

The hinges is still in good working order.

The Insignia badge is in excellent condition. Its red fabric backing is in remarkably good condition for its age!

The porcelain plaque is still very lovely. It has no chips or cracks and its bezel mount is secure. The colours of the painting are still vibrant and it has only a few teeny grazes.
