This is a superb antique jewellery box, made in Kashmir and dating to the late 19th century. It has beautiful crisp hand-carved decoration and the interior compartments have been newly refurbished.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Walnut which has a beautiful dark stained finish. It has intricate, crisp, high relief carvings to the lid and all four sides. The carvings have been done by hand by a highly skilled master craftsman. The carved decoration features beautiful large leaves and berries from the Chinar tree (Oriental Plane) which is native to Kashmir. Some of these large leaves have an intentional lighter stain which has given them a beautiful deep orange-red/bronzed like finish, mimicking the colour that real Chinar leaves turn to in Autumn. Surrounding the central panel of the lid which features the Chinar tree leaves and berries, is a frame of beautiful scrolling entwined vines which feature different leaves and small flowers. The decoration within this frame is also applied to all four sides of the lid.
Further information on the Chinar tree and the carvings on this box can be found below.
The box is complete with its original brass hinges and original working brass lock and key.
The lid extends fully back, providing very easy access to the interior compartment.
The Interior
The interior has been newly refurbished by ourselves.
The compartments have a beautiful new plush green velvet panel. The panel is plumply padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery. The dividing partition which creates two compartments can be removed if desired, if one single larger compartment is prefered. Please note there will be an indent in the velvet panel from where the partition has been seated.
The inside of the lid has a beautiful large and extremely intricate, framed carved feature. This too has scrolling vines, leaves and flowers.
The Carving
This type of Kashmiri carving to Walnut wood is known as 'dhun hath kaem' (translated Walnut wood work) or more simply 'dhoon kaem' (translated Walnut work). It uses a method of hand carving which is done very carefully and delicately, with measured strokes of chipping, carving and rounding. The carving usually depicts organic forms and motifs and the work is carried out by a master craftsman (known as a Wasta or Naqash).
The Chinar Tree
This tree forms an integral part of Kashmiri culture. Almost every village in the Kashmir Valley region has a Chinar tree which is revered. This majestic tree figures notably in Kashmir's literature, politics, religion and romance. If you walk around Srinagar in Autumn, you'll see its leaves have stunning colourful hues of blood red, mauve, amber and yellow. The oldest Chinar tree in Kashmir is believed to be 700 years old. There is a strict ban on cutting these trees which host migratory birds from Siberia and Russia.
Condition
This box is in excellent condition with little wear despite its age. It has sound structure and no apparent damage to the carvings.
The hinges and lock are still in good working order.
The interior velvet panel, being new, is in immaculate condition.
