Superb Large Antique Rosewood Jewellery Box With Drawer

FREE UK NEXT DAY DELIVERY. NO International Postage.

This is a superb large antique Rosewood veneered jewellery box. It has a beautiful partially refurbished interior with multiple storage compartments! The box is mid-Victorian, circa 1850/1860 and is in excellent condition for its age.

The Exterior

This box has wonderful Rosewood veneer which has beautiful figuration and a stunning rich colour. It is a very sturdy, weighty robust box, having a solid Mahogany carcass.

There is a beautiful large Mother of Pearl cartouche to the lid and a complementary Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the keyhole. Both are beautifully inlaid, set flush into the veneer, and both have lovely inlaid pewter frames. The Mother of Pearl has a colourful iridescent shine.

The box is complete with its original high-quality robust stop hinges which hold the lid upright. It also has its original working lock and key.

There has been some light restoration (where needed) to the Rosewood veneer but the majority of it is in beautiful original condition.

The bottom of the box has a new felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.

The Interior

The interior has been partially refurbished and sympathetically modified to make it more practical for jewellery storage. The modification (which is reversible if desired) is to the rear of the interior - further details of this are below.

The front of the interior has its original storage tray. Beneath this is the box's original lower main single compartment. Further to this, in the base of the box, is a 'secret' drawer which is also original.

The front storage tray has multiple compartments of varying shapes and sizes, with the largest compartment being complete with its original lid. The narrow front compartment is ideal for laying out chains and the lidded compartment is the ideal size for larger pieces of jewellery such as slender bangles/bracelets and watches. The remaining small to mid size compartments are perfect for brooches, rings and pendants, etc. The lid has been recovered with blue satin and has a new blue satin ribbon pull to enable you to lift it up with ease. The back of the lid has a new pretty floral paper covering. The tray has its original ring handles and the bottom of it has a new felt covering. The bases of all of the compartments have new blue satin panels.

The lower main compartment beneath the tray is large and fairly deep. It is roomy enough for broad bangles, watches and chunky beads. It is also a good length for laying out necklaces/chains. The base of the compartment has a new blue satin panel.

The 'secret' drawer in the base of the box has a quality spring-loaded mechanism. This is accessed by pushing the button in the centre hinge. The drawer has its original ultra stylish arched divider with further dividers within this which have created four compartments. The inside walls and dividers have their original leather linings with beautiful embossed gilt detail to the top edges. The bases of the compartments have their original deep navy blue silk linings. The centre front compartment has a circular inset, originally designed to hold a pocket watch. This would now make beautiful storage for a large round pendant or locket. The base of this compartment has its original dark navy blue velvet lining.

The inside of the lid has retained its original documents pouch - the front of which has its stunning original decorative panel. This has a beautiful ruffled navy blue velvet covering, within a leather covered frame which has embossed gilt decoration. All of this complements the original materials in the drawer. The panel also has a quality spring-loaded mechanism and is further secured with a beautifully engraved white metal dial catch (a later addition to the panel). To release the panel - slide the dial catch clockwise. Once the dial is moved, the panel generally drops forward of its own accord, though it is sometimes necessary to push the panel in firmly with your thumbs. This same pressure is required when pressing the panel back into its locked position. Details of how to release this panel, plus the secret drawer, are on the printed description of the box which will be included in the sale. The documents pouch can be used to store important or treasured letters and treasured photos, etc. There is an inset in the lid, behind the documents pouch, which holds a replacement cased antique mirror. The casing has a lovely deep green leather finish and the mirror has stylish beveled edges. (The original cased mirror which is sadly missing would've had a dark blue leather finish).

History Of The Box And Its Recent Modification (Reversible If Desired)

This box started its life as an extremely expensive, high-quality ladies combined jewellery and vanity box. The rear of the interior originally had five compartments that would've held glass jars for powders and cotton balls, etc. These have been sadly lost at some point during the box's history. This section of the box has now been beautifully modified. It now has two solid (stacked) removable hardwood trays, each with two storage compartments. These have new blue satin linings with new blue silk ribbon pull tabs. The wood has been beautifully stained and French polished.

Note: The original dividers from the rear of the box will be sent to the new owner, allowing them to covert the rear back to its original state if desired. These dividers can be easily reinserted into their slots, recreating the original five compartments that once held the jars.

All of the refurbishment and restoration work, as well the interior rear modification, has been carried out by our very skilled box restorer.

Condition

This superb antique box is still in wonderful condition, despite its 165/175 years of age. It has sound structure and no nasty splits or cracks. As mentioned above, there has been some light restoration (where needed) to the Rosewood veneer but the majority of it is in beautiful original condition.

The hinges, lock, and spring-loaded mechanisms are still in good working order.

There is some minor wear from age and honest use to the original silk and velvet linings.

Notes About Antique Locks And Spring-Loaded Mechanisms

We would like to make you aware that antique locks and spring-loaded mechanisms can occasionally malfunction. They are already very old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks and mechanisms that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased. All of these will be checked prior to posting. Please ensure they are all still working as soon as you receive your box.
