This is a fabulous high-quality musical jewellery box, made in the 1950s. It is made of several varieties of wood and has a beautiful shape and design. The box has been handmade by a very skilled craftsman who has taken great consideration over which woods to use. A lot of thought has also gone into the design. The box has a quality Swiss Thorens musical movement.

The Exterior

The exterior has a glorious array of wood veneers. There are five varieties of wood in total and we have given fuller details of these below.

The centre of the lid has a thick Mahogany veneer which has a carved inscription as follows: J.H.L ~ A.H. APRIL 28th 1906 ~ 1956. It is likely that the box is bespoke, made specifically as a gift for a 50th wedding anniversary. There are beautiful Sycamore veneers on either side of the Mahogany.

There are beautiful Tiger Oak veneers on all four sides of the box. Within the Oak to the front of the box, is a beautiful inlaid burr Walnut cartouche.

The lid has a symmetrical rectangular shape with stylish rounded corners. There are also very stylish pillars to each corner on the body of the box. These are made of Walnut.

The box stands raised on beautifully shaped feet which are made of Black Walnut. It is complete with its original brass hinges.

There are quality brass screws to the veneers on the lid. These are another interesting feature of the box, not only being functional but decorative too.

The Woods/Cuts Of Wood

It is evident that the craftsman of this box has carefully considered what woods to use. He has chosen some of the best varieties and cuts. There is beautiful Tiger Oak with its characteristic stripes. Burr Walnut with its marbled figuration, taken from a knot in the wood. Quartersawn Sycamore, cut in this way to show off its flecked rays. This cut of Sycamore has a 'freckled' appearance and is sometimes referred to as Lacewood. The Walnut of the pillars have a beautiful grain with black flecks and the Black Walnut feet have an intense deep colour.

The Interior

The interior has been beautifully finished and its quality matches that of the exterior.

There is a single storage compartment on the right and a beautiful wooden casing on the left which conceals the musical movement.

The casing has a high-quality hinged lid which allows you to access the movement, should it ever require attention. It is made of exotic (probably Brazillian) Mahogany. Most casings have lids which are cheap wooden ledges and they are often fixed with tacks or glue.

The compartment and the inside of the lid have their original velvet linings. These are a warm chocolate brown shade.

The Musical Movement

This box has a quality Swiss Thorens musical movement. We don't recognise the tune but please feel free to contact us if you wish to hear it before purchasing the box.

The movement is in good working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo.

Operating The Musical Movement

The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 4 turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.

Notes On Vintage Musical Movements

As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Overwinding will result in the movement malfunctioning. Please allow the movement to fully unwind before rewinding. We are not responsible for movements that are overwound or for movements which deteriorate from further age and use once boxes are purchased.

Please check the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

Please read our returns policy which includes our policy on musical movements.

History Of Thorens Musical Movements

This firm was founded in 1883, in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland by Hermann Thorens. In 1902 they also began making cylinder phonographs and in 1906 they made spring-driven disc gramophones. Further on in their history, they made numerous other musical items such as harmonicas, electric gramophones and turntables. They also made non-musical goods such as pocket lighters and shavers. Thorens is still in production today, becoming Thorens Services Ltd in 2002. It is still a family business being run by the descendants of Hermann.

Condition

This wonderful box is still in excellent condition. It has sound structure and very little wear! All of the wood has been recently polished to remove light surface scratches and blemishes. The polish has brought out the beautiful grains of the woods and has given the box a beautiful sheen.

The interior linings are unusually clean for their age. They are still neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying.

The hinges are still in good working order.

It is obvious that this box has been extremely well cared for by its previous owner/s.
