This is a wonderful antique Rosewood jewellery box with a beautiful partially refurbished interior. It is complete with its original working lock and key.

Date

Early William IV. Circa 1830-1835.

The Exterior

This box has wonderful Rosewood veneer which has a beautiful rich colour and superb figuration. It has a very stylish sarcophagus shape and a raised panel to the centre of the lid. There is a frame of beautiful beaded moulding to the panel and matching moulding all the way around the bottom edges of the box.

The lid has superb Mother of Pearl inlaid decoration which features beautiful Swans gliding upon water and surrounded by reeds. In addition to this there is a beautiful highly decorative inlaid Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the keyhole.

The bottom of the box has a new felt covering and its original beautifully turned bun feet.

The box is complete with its original brass 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright. It also has its original working brass lock and key. The lock is stamped GR for George IV.

The Interior

The interior has been partially refurbished by our skilled box restorer.

The compartment has beautiful new gold satin panels. The base panel is lightly padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery.

The inside of the lid has its original padded gold fabric panel. This has a lovely shimmery textured pattern. The surrounding walls have new quality cream paper linings.

The compartment is spacious and deep enough to hold large pieces of jewellery such as broad bangles and watches.

Condition

This beautiful box is in excellent condition for its age. It has sound structure and no significant flaws. There is a fine superficial age crack to the raised panel on the lid which isn't overly noticeable.

All of the Mother of Pearl inlay is present and secure, bar one tiny piece missing on the rear of the lid. Again this is not overly obvious. All of the beaded moulding is present and secure.

The new interior linings are in clean unused condition. The original gold panel inside the lid is in very good condition with no splits.
