This is a superb highly decorated antique jewellery box, originating from the Black Forest. It dates to around 1880 and is in fantastic condition despite its age. The interior has been fully refurbished and the box has its original working lock and key.

The Exterior

This box is predominantly made of solid Walnut. It has beautiful flowing curves and superb hand-carved flowers and leaves. These decorate the lid plus the fronts of the storage compartments. That to the lid is a high relief carving and is of a lovely large size. The lid is further decorated all over with a hand-carved multi diamond-shaped pattern. There are pretty little flowers stamped within each of the diamonds. The edges of the lid have beautiful carved decoration also.

There are further hand-carved motifs to the fronts of the compartments (both surrounding and to the sides of the foliate carvings), as well to the bottom front of the box. There is also lovely carving to the panels on the rear of the box.

In addition to all of the above-mentioned decoration, there is beautiful moulding around the base of the box.

The beautiful long lock flap that is positioned between the compartments has been bespoke made by our skilled box restorer. This has replaced the original flap which was not functioning as well as we'd like. The new flap has been made from wood which was taken from another old Black Forest box. This particular box was beyond repair and it's lovely to know that a part of it still lives on! The wood that has created the new flap has beautiful fluted moulding.

The box has its original working brass lock which is complete with its original key. A new gold silk tassel has been added to the key to complement the interior's new linings. The lock is a high-quality continental lock. Details of this lock and the interior refurbishment are given below.

All of the wood to the exterior has been polished, giving it a beautiful sheen.

The lid and compartments have their original brass hinges.

The bottom of the box has soft white felt pads that protect the surfaces of furniture.

The Interior

The interior has two tiers of swing opening compartments, with each of the tiers having two compartments. A further larger compartment is beneath these, making five compartments in total.

The entire interior has been fully refurbished by our very skilled box restorer. The bases of all five compartments have new padded gold satin panels. The padding provides cushioned protection for jewellery.

The walls to the compartments have new high-quality paper linings. These are a beautiful charcoal grey shade and have a decorative floral print. This paper was chosen to complement the exterior's beautifully hand-carved flowers and leaves.

The inside of the lid also has a new (unpadded) gold satin panel.

The smaller swing compartments are the ideal size for storing pendants, rings, earrings and brooches, etc. The larger lower compartment is ideal for bigger pieces of jewellery, being deep enough to store broad bangles, watches and chunky beads, etc.

About The Continental Lock

This beautiful box has a continental lock which was designed to deter thieves from stealing its contents. It was cleverly designed so that its key could be turned TWICE, to both lock and unlock the box. The idea was that an intruder would believe the lock to be faulty when it did not open upon just one turn of the key. The lock can, however, be operated with just one turn of the key if desired.

Notes About Antique Locks

We would like to make you aware that antique locks can occasionally malfunction. They are already very old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased. Please ensure the lock is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting the box.
