This is a beautiful English antique jewellery box which started its life as an expensive ladies glove box. It has a gorgeous glossy black lacquered finish and beautiful hand-painted flowers. These had very symbolic meanings during the Victorian era. Please see the information given below. The box dates to the late Victorian period, circa 1870-1890.
The Exterior
The exterior has a glossy black lacquered 'Japanned' finish. The lid has stunning hand-painted Poppies and Daisies. These organic subjects are simply beautiful and this particular design which includes Poppies is quite rare.
The Interior
The interior has its original glossy red lacquered finish.
The base of the compartment has been newly lined with a soft padded black velvet panel. The panel has been added to make the box more functional for jewellery storage. The panel has a pretty flower patterned paper backing and is removable. This allows the box to be used for storing different items other than jewellery, if desired.
The box has its original beautifully shaped hinges.
History
This box started life as an expensive ladies glove box. It is a wonderful piece of social history which has been adapted to make it more functional for jewellery storage. The velvet panel can be removed if desired, allowing for the storage of trinkets and other items.
The Victorian Symbolism
The Daisies symbolized purity and innocence.
The Poppies were symbolic of imagination, pleasure and eternal sleep.
English Victorian 'Japanning'
'Japanning' (the name given for making objects look like examples of Japanese lacquer work) was very popular during the Victorian period. The Victorians loved the look of Japanese lacquered items, but it was not their intention to produce replicas of these. Instead, they used a very similar style of lacquer and decorated their items with more 'English' looking subjects.
Japanese lacquer was made from native trees but this often cracked in the cold British climate. The Victorians, therefore, used tar and pitch with papier mache, to create a very similar, smooth black surface.
Condition
This beautiful box is in excellent condition for its 135-155 years of age. It has sound structure and no chips or cracks.
There is no loss to the painted decoration and the colours are still beautifully vivid.
The lacquered finish is still in remarkably good condition.
The hinges are still in perfect working order.
