This is a superb high-quality antique jewellery box that was made in the Black Forest region. It dates to the early 20th century, circa 1900-1910. It has extremely ornate hand-carved decoration and is complete with its original fabric linings and working lock.

The Exterior

This box is made of solid Linden wood (from the Lime tree).

The lid and base have beautiful flowing curves and the sides of the body of the box have wonderful contoured concave shaping.

There is a beautiful domed panel to the centre of the lid. Upon this is a stunning hand-carved crested bird, perched upon a nest containing three beautifully shaped eggs! There are fine hand-carved details to both the bird and its nest plus beautifully carved leaves on the left and right sides and front of the box. There are also finely carved motifs on the rear side of the box. There is a lovely stippled finish to the wood beneath the leaves. This has created a beautiful textured surface to these regions of the box.

The box stands raised on very ornate hand-carved Flemish Scroll style legs. This style of leg was developed in the second half of the 17th century and can be seen on late Baroque furniture. They are also known as double scroll legs or S scroll legs and they were notably used by Gerrit Jensen (the most important figure in English cabinet making) who made pieces of furniture for King Charles II.

The box has its original polished hinges and its original working lock. A lovely period replacement key has been fitted to the lock.

Printed details on the history of carved Black Forest boxes will be sent along with the box.

The Interior

The interior has a single storage compartment. The compartment and the inside of the lid have their original textured red fabric linings. These have a beautiful diamond pattern.

Notes About Antique Locks

We would like to make you aware that antique locks can occasionally malfunction. They are already very old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use.

We are not responsible for locks that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased. Please ensure the lock is working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

You can view our full returns policy which includes locks by visiting our Payments And Returns page.

Condition

This wonderful old box has sound structure and only minor repairs as detailed above. The hinges and lock are still in excellent working order and the replacement period key securely locks the box.

The interior's original linings are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. The majority of the linings are clean. There are a few old ink marks to those in the compartment. Please view all of the photos provided before purchasing this box.
