This is a fabulous rare and very collectable jewellery box by the renowned and well respected box and furniture maker, William Norrie. It has stunning exotic wood veneers and inlays, and the interior compartments have new removable padded satin panels with the original worn velvet linings still present beneath.

Age
Late 19th century, circa 1890.
The Exterior
This box is made of both solid Oak and Pine and has a myriad of stunning exotic wood veneers and inlays.
The veneer and marquetry inlay consist of Puriri, Rewarewa, Mottled Kauri, Maire, and other exotic woods which are native to New Zealand, this being the country where the maker of this box emigrated to in 1852.
The marquetry on the lid features a large diamond frame with a large central star. The marquetry to the front has a stunning honeycomb like design. The marquetry is made up of numerous, beautifully shaped pieces of wood.
The box is complete with its original solid brass hinges and lock.
Note: The lock is not functional and therefore has no key.
The box stands slightly raised on its original turned feet and has Norrie's beautiful trademark visible finger/box joints. These joints apply to the interior storage tray also.
The box has beautiful rounded corners to the lid and base.
A faux 'old' William Norrie label has been added to the bottom of the box to add interest. This label or similar would have been placed on his newly constructed boxes/furniture.
The Interior
The interior has a two compartment storage tray at the top and a larger more spacious single compartment beneath. All three compartments have new removable padded satin panels which are a beautiful teal blue shade. These provide cushioned protection for jewellery and add a lovely splash of the colour to the interior. In being removable they maintain the lovely originality of the box by allowing access to the original worn velvet linings beneath. The panels have silk pull tabs which allow you to remove them with ease, and their backs have lovely floral printed paper linings.
The bottom of the storage tray has a new felt covering.
The lower compartment is a generous size, being deep enough to store large pieces of jewellery such as broad bangles, watches and chunky beads. Please see the measurements given below.
Condition
This fabulous box is in extremely good condition. It is structurally sound and has only minor light age-related wear.
All of the inlays/veneers are present, intact and securely seated.
The interior satin panels are in immaculate unused condition, being new. There is wear to the original velvet linings beneath these.
There are some light scratches/pits to the inside of the lid and box.
