This is a beautiful antique jewellery box, made in Nice in the French Riviera. It is made of solid Olivewood and it dates back to the 1920s. The box has pretty hand-painted decoration and is complete with its original silk linings.
This is a beautiful antique jewellery box, made in Nice in the French Riviera. It is made of solid Olivewood and it dates back to the 1920s. The box has pretty hand-painted decoration and is complete with its original silk linings.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Olivewood which has beautiful figuration and a lovely stained finish. It has a beautiful hand-painted spray of flowers on the lid, along with 'Nice' which is also hand-painted. There are beautiful flowing curves to both the lid and base of the box.
The box has a rare concealed wooden closure - a fan shaped 'tongue' which slots into a groove within the lid. It has its original 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment. The compartment plus the inside of the lid have their original silk linings. These are a lovely peach like colour.
History
This box was made as a souvenir for the Nice tourist market, probably by an Italian craftsman. Many Italians migrated to France in the early 20th century, bringing with them Olivewood from their native country.
About Olivewood
Olivewood has a distinctive grain and rich colour which gives it a beautiful appearance. It has characteristic brown and yellow streaks which make for a beautiful contrast. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes.
Olivewood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density and it takes well to cutting and polishing.
The Olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem.
Condition
This lovely old box is in very good condition. It is structurally sound and has no chips or cracks. There is some minor light wear and some blemishes to the Olivewood, commensurate with age and honest use. We have recently polished the box to bring back its original sheen.
The interior linings are still in good condition overall. They are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. There is some discolouration and minor wear to the silk in the compartment as we'd expect in a box of this age which has been loved and used.
All of the hand-painted decoration is present and still quite colourful.
