Refurbished Italian Art Deco Inlaid Walnut Jewellery Box

This is a beautiful Art Deco jewellery box, made in Italy in the 1930s. It's storage compartment has been fully refurbished by ourselves.

The Exterior

This box is made of solid Walnut. The lid has beautiful marquetry inlay, surrounded by an inlaid micro mosaic frame. The marquetry has a beautiful foliate design and is set into Birds Eye Maple veneer. There is a dark wood veneer around the sides of the lid.

The box has beautiful curving sides and a streamlined shape which was popular throughout the Art Deco period. It stands raised on its original tapered black bakelite feet,

There is inlaid wood stringing around the bottom of the box.

The Micro Mosaic Inlay

The inlay to the frame on the lid is known as 'mosaic tesselated inlay'. It is made up of 1000s of tiny pieces of wood, painstakingly put together to form intricate mosaic designs.

The Interior

The interior has a single storage compartment which has been newly refurbished by ourselves. It has a new padded dark blue velvet panel to the base and high-quality foiled paper linings to the walls.

The inside of the lid has its original bevelled edged mirror. This is held in place with its original beautifully shaped brass brackets.

The box has its original brass piano hinge and its original working brass lock. A replacement key has been fitted to the lock. The hinge is a quality stop hinge that holds the lid upright.

The Panel and Linings

The paper has a decorative embossed gold foliate print. It was chosen to complement the foliate marqetry inlay plus the colour of the brass brackets, hinge and lock. The paper was both measured and cut by hand to fit the compartment perfectly.

The padded velvet panel provides cushioned protection for jewellery. This was completely handmade to fit the compartment perfectly.

This box was originally a musical box. Its broken musical movement was removed and this created more storage space. The interior originally had a very small compartment on the left, with the movement cased to the right of this,

This wonderful box is in very good condition for its 90 plus years of age. It has sound structure and only minor light wear, commensurate with age and honest use.

All of the inlay is present and intact.

There are a couple of tiny pieces of the dark wood veneer missing to the sides of the lid.

The interior mirror is secure and has no chips or cracks. It has some age-related small marks (mainly around its edges) but is still lovely and clear on the whole.

The interior linings, being new, are in immaculate condition.
