This is a superb high-quality Victorian jewellery box with a very stylish, almost contemporary look. It is veneered with rare exotic Coromandel wood and the interior has been beautifully refurbished. The box is complete with its original lock and key.

The Exterior

This box is veneered with exotic Coromandel wood which has truly beautiful figuration. Further information on this wood can be viewed below.

There is a beautiful Mother of Pearl cartouche on the lid plus a complementary Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the keyhole. These are beautifully inlaid, set flush into the veneer, and both are surrounded by pewter stringing.

The box is complete with its original working brass lock and bow key. It also has its original brass hinges. These are high-quality 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright.

The bottom of the box has a new baize covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.

About Coromandel Wood

Coromandel is a rare exotic wood from India and Sri Lanka which has sadly been logged to near extinction over the last few hundred years. It is no longer available for new work in any quantity and hence is now a rare and valuable wood.

Coromandel is part of the Ebony family. It is more vibrantly coloured than other varieties of Ebony with its stunning hazel brown and black colouration. It also has much more figuration. In Dame Edith Sitwell's poem 'Black Mrs Behemoth', the grain of Coromandel was described as the 'rolling curling smoke of a blown-out candle'. This is a very accurate description of its stunning figuration!

The use of Coromandel on boxes and furniture is always a sign of quality. The Victorians loved Coromandel wood but it was so expensive that they often only used it on the lids and fronts of boxes. This particular box has it veneered all over.

The Interior

The interior has been beautifully refurbished by our skilled box restorer.

The storage compartment plus the inside of the lid have beautiful new padded satin-covered panels. These provide cushioned protection for jewellery. The satin is a lovely slate grey shade. The interior walls of the compartment and lid have beautiful new paper linings. These are high-quality paper linings which are dark grey with white leafy sprigs.

Condition

This box is in wonderful condition for its age. It has sound structure and only minor light age-related wear.

There are some tiny nibbles to the veneer at the rear bottom corners of the box. These are barely noticeable.

There is a very fine hairline crack within the Mother of Pearl escutcheon. This too is not very noticeable.

There are minor light superficial surface scratches to the veneer on the lid in one area.

All of the above minor flaws are commensurate with age and honest use.

The box locks securely and the hinges are in perfect working order.

The interior satin and paper linings, being new, are in excellent clean and unused condition.
