This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. It dates to the 1950s/1960s and has a nicely lined interior. It has a quality Swiss Reuge musical movement which plays the beautiful Italian tune 'Arrivederci Roma'.

The Exterior

This box has a stained and varnished veneer which has given it a lovely glossy finish. Its lid has stunning floral inlay which is surrounded by a decorative veneered wood frame. This has a beautiful stripy grain.

The floral inlay features two large flowers in full bloom amongst further flowers and leaves. It consists of several colourful varieties of wood.

There is beautiful inlaid Satinwood stringing around the body of the box, on all four sides.

The box has its original piano hinge. This is a stop hinge which holds the lid upright.

The box stands raised on beautifully tapered resin feet.

The bottom of the box has retained its original Reuge song title label.

The Interior

The interior has a single storage compartment on the left and the musical movement is cased to the right. The compartment and casing, plus the inside of the lid, have their original vibrant red plush velour linings. The velour inside the lid is padded.

The Musical Movement

This box has a quality Swiss Reuge musical movement. This plays the beautiful Italian tune 'Arrivederci Roma'. The English translation of this is 'Goodbye Rome'. The music was composed in 1955 by Renato Rascel and its lyrics were written by Pietro Garinei and Sandro Giovannini. Dean Martin sang this on his 1962 album Dino - Italian Love Songs. It has been performed by many artists over the years, including Nat King Cole, Mario Lanza, Richard Clayderman and Perry Como, to name just a few!

The movement is in excellent working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo. The casing can be removed should the movement ever require attention.

Operating The Musical Movement

The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 5 turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.

Notes On Vintage Musical Movements

As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Overwinding will result in the movement malfunctioning. We are not responsible for movements that are overwound or for movements which deteriorate from further age and use once boxes are purchased.

Please check the movement as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

Please read our returns policy which includes our policy on musical movements.

History Of Reuge Musical Movements

The history of Reuge musical movements began in 1865. Charles Reuge, a Swiss clock and watchmaker, first made movements to be fitted into watches. Inspired by his father, his son Albert, opened a music box workshop 20 years later, in Sainte Croix. The Reuge dynasty was born and led by Guido Reuge for more than 60 years. Reuge are still in production today and are currently the world leader in manufacturing luxury music boxes worldwide. They still operate in the same building that Guido Reuge ordered to be constructed in 1929.

Condition

This lovely old box has sound structure and is in very nice condition for its 60/70 years of age. It has only minor light wear from age and honest use.

All of the inlay is present and intact.

The interior velour linings are still in very good condition. They are clean and neatly fitted. There is a slight circular indentation to the lining inside the lid. This is most likely from a bangle or watch having pressed against it in the past.

The hinge is still in good working order and the feet are secure.
