Lovely Japanese Antique Puzzle Jewellery Box

FREE UK NEXT DAY DELIVERY. We Ship Worldwide.

This is a wonderful small antique Japanese puzzle jewellery box, dating to around 1910/1920. It has a decorative inlaid Japanese landscape scene, and a secret lock plus a secret compartment. The interior has a beautiful new removable velvet panel.

The Exterior

This beautiful old wooden box has a decorative inlaid Japanese landscape scene on the lid. This features Mount Fuji, sailing boats, Japanese black pine trees and a Japanese hut.

The box is in the form of books. There are two books horizontally placed at the top and bottom, and a row of upright volumes in between. The spines of the books have lovely hand-painted line detail.

The box is complete with its original hinges. It also has its original secret lock and key. The lock is concealed by the spine of the fourth volume. There is a shallow secret compartment within the bottom horizontally placed book. Instructions on how to access the secret lock and compartment will be sent along with the box.

The bottom of the box has a new felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.

The Interior

The interior has a single storage compartment. The base of the compartment has a new padded velvet panel, providing cushioned protection for jewellery. The panel has a quality paper backing and a beautiful silk ribbon pull which enables you to lift it out of the box with ease. We have made the panel removable so that the box can be used for trinkets/coins etc instead of jewellery, if desired; also to allow viewing of the wood beneath.

History Of Small Puzzle Boxes

These beautiful old small puzzle boxes with their secret locks and compartments were designed to securely store valuable pieces of jewellery and treasured small photos, etc. Puzzle boxes are still made today but these modern version are rarely as beautiful or well made.

The key to this box can be stored in the secret compartment for safekeeping.

Condition

This wonderful box is still in good condition. It has sound structure and no nasty damage. There are two minor fine hairline cracks on the lid which are completely consolidated and in no way affect the structure.

The interior velvet panel, being new, is in immaculate condition.

The hinges are still in good working order and the box locks securely.
