This is a lovely small antique jewellery box, made in Cannes in the French Riviera. It is made of solid Olivewood from the Mediterranean and it dates to the 1920s. This beautiful box was originally made as a souvenir item for Cannes' tourist market.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Olivewood which has beautiful figuration. It has beautiful hand-painted Swallows on the lid, along with 'Cannes' in hand-painted fancy script. Swallows have long been representative of the safe journey home of a loved one.
The box is complete with its original 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright. It also has its original working continental lock and key.
The Olivewood has a polished and varnished finish.
The bottom of the box has a new felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The Interior
The interior has been fully refurbished by ourselves.
The compartment has a new padded dusky pink velvet panel and its walls have new quality cream paper linings. The padding provides cushioned protection for jewellery.
The rear wall to the inside of the lid has a new quality printed paper panel. This features a lovely large flower in full bloom, along with French 'writing' in fancy italic script. The panel is framed with beautiful silver silk cord trim and the walls inside the lid have new quality cream paper linings.
History
This box was made as a souvenir for the Cannes tourist market, probably by an Italian craftsman. Many Italians migrated to France in the early 20th century, bringing with them Olivewood from their own country.
About Olivewood
Olivewood has a distinctive grain and rich colour which gives it a beautiful appearance. It has characteristic brown and yellow streaks which make for a beautiful contrast. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes.
Olivewood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density and it takes well to cutting and polishing.
The Olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem.
Details of the Continental Lock
This box has a wonderful continental lock which was designed to deter thieves from stealing its contents. It was cleverly designed so that its key could be turned TWICE to both lock and unlock the box. The idea was that an intruder would believe the lock to be faulty when it did not open upon just one turn! The lock can, however, be operated with just one turn if desired.
Condition
This wonderful old box is in very good condition. It is structurally sound and has no chips or cracks.
The interior panels and linings, being new, are in immaculate unworn condition.
All of the hand-painted decoration to the lid is still in very good condition.
The hinges and lock are still in good working order.
