A beautiful English antique papier mache box with a black lacquered finish and hand-painted flowers. The interior compartment has a new padded velvet panel. The box dates to the Victorian period, circa 1870/1880.
This is a beautiful English antique papier mache box with a new padded velvet panel to the interior compartment. It dates to the Victorian period, circa 1870/1880.
The Exterior
The exterior has a beautiful black lacquered 'Japanned' finish. We have recently polished this to bring back much of its original glossy sheen.
The lid has hand-painted Daisies, Forget Me Nots and a Dragonfly. All of these subjects have symbolic meanings, descriptions of which are given below. The Victorians were big on symbolism and decorated many items with subjects that would be endearing for their recipients.
The box has its original hinges.
Flower And Dragonfly Symbolism
The Daisies symbolise purity and innocence.
The Forget Me Nots, as their name suggests, have the endearing sentiment "Remember Me".
The Dragonfly symbolises change and transformation, embracing rather than fearing change. It can also symbolise happiness, new beginnings and hope.
English Victorian 'Japanning'
'Japanning' (the name given for making objects look like examples of Japanese lacquer work) was very popular during the Victorian period. The Victorians loved the look of Japanese lacquered items, but it was not their intention to produce replicas of these. Instead, they used a very similar style of lacquer and decorated their items with more 'English' looking subjects.
Japanese lacquer was made from native trees but this often cracked in the cold British climate. The Victorians, therefore, used tar and pitch with papier mache, to create a very similar, smooth black surface.
The Interior
The interior has a beautiful red lacquered finish.
The base of the compartment has been newly lined with a soft padded black velvet panel. The panel has been added to make the box more functional for jewellery storage. The panel has a pastel patterned paper backing and is removable. This allows the box to be used for storing different items other than jewellery, if desired.
Condition
This beautiful box is still in very good condition, despite its 130-140 years of age. The lacquer is still in lovely condition, with a beautiful sheen thanks to its recent polish. There are no splits or cracks.
The interior velvet panel, being new, is in immaculate unused condition.
There is some loss of paint to the Forget-Me-Nots / minor loss of paint to the Daisies. There is minor light wear to the lacquered finish in a few areas. None of these flaws are overly unsightly.
There is minor light wear to the bottom of the box as we'd expect due to its age.
