A beautiful Japanese vintage musical jewellery box, still in superb condition. Hand-painted decoration to both the exterior and interior. Original linings and working lock and key. Lovely black lacquered finish.

This is a beautifully decorated Japanese jewellery box which is still in excellent condition. It is a wonderful vintage musical box, dating to the 1950s.
The Exterior
The box has a lovely black lacquered finish and is decorated all over with beautiful hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes. These scenes include Mount Fuji, hills, temples, bridges, trees and sailing boats.
The scene on the lid is surrounded by beautiful broad diagonal bands of iridescent Abalone shell.
There is a pretty engraved metal escutcheon to the keyhole.
The box is complete with its original hinges and original working lock and key.
The black lacquer has been newly polished to bring back some of its original glossy sheen.
The colours of the paint are still vibrant.
The Interior
The top of the interior has a tray with a single compartment. This automatically rises when you lift up the lid, due to it having quality cantilever hinges. The tray also has a beautiful glossy black lacquered finish and hand-painted decoration which complements that on the box's exterior. It has two hinged lids that are complete with their original ring handles and pretty plaited tassels.
There is a further larger compartment beneath the tray and the musical movement is cased to the right of this. The ledge of the casing has a lacquered finish and hand-painted decoration, and can be removed should the movement ever require attention.
The inside of the lid has a fitted mirror with further hand-painted decoration. This features a Geisha girl with a parasol, being drawn on a rickshaw, as well as a temple and hills.
The compartments have their original deep blue ribbed cord linings and the mirror is beautifully framed with the same fabric.
The Musical Movement

Operating The Movement
Four turns of the key are sufficient to wind up the musical movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements and Locks
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
Vintage movements/locks are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally deteriorate or malfunction over time.
We are not responsible for movements/locks that may deteriorate/malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please check the movement and lock as soon as you receive your box. They will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This lovely box is in excellent condition, despite its 70 plus years of age. It has sound structure and no damage.
The musical movement, lock and hinges are all in good working order. The key is a little fiddly to get into position in the lock, however once in position it securely locks.
The interior cord linings are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. There are some age related old marks within the top tray from previous jewellery storage.
The mirror is secure and has no chips or cracks.
