High Quality Red Leather Antique Jewellery Box

FREE UK NEXT DAY DELIVERY.  We Ship Worldwide.

This is a superb antique jewellery box with a deep burgundy red leather finish. It has its original high-quality working Bramah lock that is complete with its original key. This is rare with Bramah locks as most often they are lost! The box dates to 1900-1910. It was made and retailed by a firm that had a high-end store, in Liverpool, between 1837 and the 1930s. Further details in respect of this can be seen below.

The Exterior

The exterior has a rich deep burgundy red leather finish. The leather is textured and has been refinished by our skilled box restorer. It is newly waxed and has a lovely glossy sheen.

The lid has its original decorative white metal plate and swing handle. It also has its original complementary white metal hinges. These are quality 'stop' hinges that hold the lid upright.

The box has its original working BRAMAH lock. It also has its original key which is rare as most often Bramah locks are missing their keys.

About Bramah Locks

Bramah locks are superb patented locks (patented since the 18th century) with a unique locking mechanism. A box fitted with a Bramah lock is invariably a strong indicator of high quality and an expensive retail price. All antique locks manufactured by the Bramah company are stamped BRAMAH LONDON. This is the case with the lock on this box,

A document with further details about Bramah locks (including instructions on how to operate them) and the history of the Bramah company, will be sent along with the box.

Instructions on how to care for leather finished boxes will also be sent with this box.

The Maker/Original Retailer

This box was made and originally retailed by John Bagshaw & Sons of Liverpool. This firm operated from 1837, through to the 1930s. They had a high-end store in Church Street, Liverpool, selling high quality fancy goods, including boxes, bags, clocks and dressing cases etc.

The firm's gold embossed maker's stamp is to the right side of the lock.

Notes on this firm will be sent along with the box.

The Interior

The interior has a storage tray with multiple compartments, plus two further larger and deeper compartments beneath.

The tray has three compartments at the front with the central compartment having a circular ring. This ring was originally designed to hold a pocket watch. This would now look lovely with a large locket or pendant within it, and/or a slim bracelet/bangle placed around it.

There is a long narrow ring storage section behind the compartments and a further long narrow compartment behind this. This rear compartment is the ideal shape and size for laying out chains.

The bases of the front left and right and rear compartments have their original burgundy red silk linings. Those to the front are padded and provide cushioned protection for jewellery. The ring storage section and centre front compartment have their original red velvet linings/coverings. The bottom of the tray has its original silk covering and tray also has its original leather pull tabs. These enable you to lift out the tray with ease.

The two lower larger compartments are deep and spacious, roomy enough for storing broad bangles, watches and chunky beads. The bases of these plus the inside of the lid have their original padded burgundy red silk panels.

All of the silk is high-quality watered silk.

The interior walls have the same leather finish as on the exterior of the box.

Condition

This box is in very good condition for its age. It has sound structure and only minor light wear and small scuffs, commensurate with age and honest use.

The interior linings are still neatly fitted and in lovely clean condition with no splits or fraying.

The hinges and lock are still in excellent working order.
