This is a beautiful antique Walnut jewellery box with decorative inlay and a fully refurbished interior. It dates to the late Victorian period, circa 1880/1890. The box has a working lock and key.

This is a beautiful antique Walnut jewellery box with decorative inlay and a fully refurbished interior. It dates to the late Victorian period, circa 1880/1890.
The Exterior
This box has beautiful Walnut veneer and very attractive inlaid Berlin Strapwork bands which run across the lid and down the front of the box. The centre of the lid has a beautiful inlaid Mother of Pearl cartouche, surrounded by further inlaid decoration. The keyhole has a matching Mother of Pearl escutcheon and inlaid frame. All of the inlay is made of various colourful hardwoods.
The box is complete with its original working brass lock. It also has its original brass stop hinges which hold the lid upright. A 'new' key has been fitted to the lock.
The bottom of the box has a new black felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
All of the Walnut has been recently polished.
About Berlin Strapwork Inlay
This is a beautiful type of inlay, consisting of several varieties of colourful hardwoods. Each inlaid band is made up of hundreds of small pieces of wood, intricately placed to create beautiful symmetrical or asymmetrical patterns.
The Interior
The interior has been fully refurbished and looks absolutely beautiful. The base and walls of the compartment plus the walls inside the lid, have new plush deep navy blue velvet panels. The compartment's base panel is plumply padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery. The back panel inside the lid has a beautiful new floral printed paper panel, surrounded by beautiful new silver silk cord trim. The paper features beautiful Roses and has a lovely pastel grey-charcoal colour with hints of pastel rose-pink.
The compartment is large and roomy; deep enough to store large pieces of jewellery such as broad bangles and watches.
Condition
This lovely old box is in good condition for its age. It has sound structure and no cracks. All of the inlay is securely seated.
The Walnut veneer has some age related wear and fine surface scratches which aren't overly obvious. There are two small nibbles within the veneer on each side of the lid and one small piece of veneer missing on the rear of the box. This is at the very bottom left corner and so doesn't notice very much. None of these small flaws spoil the beautiful overall appearance of the box.
The interior linings, being new, are in immaculate clean and unworn condition.
The hinges and lock are still in good working order.
