This is a beautiful Victorian jewellery box with a stunning partially refurbished interior. It dates to 1850/1860 and is in wonderful condition despite its age. It boasts rare exotic Amboyna wood veneer.

This is a beautiful Victorian jewellery box with a stunning partially refurbished interior. It dates to 1850/1860 and is in wonderful condition despite its age.
The Exterior
This box has rare exotic Amboyna Burl wood veneer on all four sides plus the lid. This has a glorious rich warm colour and beautiful figuration.
The edges of the lid are beautifully angled and feature a dark ebonised finish plus white metal inlay. There is superb finer inlaid bone detailing within the ebonised sections.
There is a large complementary inlaid white metal cartouche to the centre of the lid which also features ebonised motifs and fine inlaid bone detailing.
There is a complementary inlaid white metal diamond shaped escutcheon to the keyhole.
The box is complete with its original brass stop hinges which hold the lid upright. It is also complete with its original brass lock.
Please note the lock is not functional and therefore has no key.
The bottom of the box has a new felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The Interior
The interior has a single good sized storage compartment which is deep enough to hold large pieces of jewellery, such as broad bangles, watches and chunky beads.
The compartment has been beautifully refurbished by our very skilled box restorer. It has beautiful new red satin panels. The base panel is padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery.
The inside of the lid is absolutely stunning. It has its original fitted oval-shaped mirror, surrounded by its fabulous original ruffled red silk panel. The panel is surrounded by its original red silk covered frame. The mirror has very stylish bevel edging and is framed with red silk twisted cord. The cord is also original. The walls inside the lid have new quality red paper linings.

Condition
This beautiful box is still in excellent condition, despite its 160-170 years of age. It has sound structure and no unsightly damage.
The new satin panels are in excellent condition, having seen no use since they were made and fitted.
All of the inlay is present and intact, and the mirror is free from cracks and chips which is remarkable considering its age.
The Amboyna Burl wood veneer is in very good condition with only very minor light wear.
There is minor wear to the original silk.
The hinges are still in good working order.
About Amboyna Burl Wood
Amboyna Burl is an exotic wood from the Pterocarpus Indicus genus. Its name derived from Amboyna Island, one of the places the tree can be found. The tree and wood is sometimes referred to as 'Narra' but in Burl form it is known as Amboyna. This wood was much favoured by French box and cabinet makers because of its beautiful appearance.
