Fabulous Large Restored And Refurbished Regency Jewellery Box

This is a superb high-quality antique Rosewood box that has been beautifully refurbished and restored. It dates back to the Regency period, circa 1820/1830.

The History

This box started life as a very expensive three-compartment tea chest. The centre compartment would've housed a mixing bowl and the compartments on either side would've been for storing tea leaves. The box has now been restored and refurbished and converted into a very functional and stylish jewellery box.

The Exterior

This box has a stunning Rosewood veneer which has a beautiful rich colour and superb figuration. It has a very stylish Sarcophagus shape with beautiful angles to both the lid and body of the box. There is also a lovely raised panel to the centre of the lid.

There is an abundance of beautiful Mother of Pearl inlay and inlaid pewter stringing on this fabulous box. The Mother of Pearl inlay consists of beautiful pierced pieces with flowers and leaves and beautiful roundels. The floral inlay to the front of the box is surrounded by decorative pewter inlaid arches. There is a lovely inlaid Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the keyhole. All of this inlaid decoration is completely original.

There are lovely round swing metal handles on both sides of the box. These are attached to beautiful metal fitments which have stunning flower and beading detail. These handles/fitments are period replacements that date back to the same period as the box. The original handles would've been made of turned wood.

The box stands raised on beautifully turned squat bun feet. These too are Regency period replacements which are in keeping with the box's original feet.

The box is complete with its original 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright.

The box has a newly fitted brass lock and key. The lock is a fully working Regency period replacement and the steel keep is original to the box. The key is new.

The bottom of the box has a red paper covering which has been added in recent years.

The Interior

The interior has been fully refurbished to a very high standard. It has a new French polished hardwood tray with three storage compartments and a further larger single compartment is beneath this.

The storage tray has metal handles that allow you to lift it out of the box with ease. It has a new quality red paper covering on the bottom to complement that on the bottom of the box.

The interior bases of all four compartments have beautiful new Raspberry Red satin panels. These are padded and provide cushioned protection for jewellery. The interior walls of the tray have new Raspberry Red satin linings and the walls of the lower compartment have new quality patterned cream paper linings.

The compartments in the tray are ideal for chains, necklaces, bracelets, pendants, brooches, rings and earrings. The much larger lower compartment is deep enough and roomy enough for larger pieces of jewellery such as broad bangles, watches and chunky beads.

The inside of the lid has its original decoration which consists of pewter stringing and Mother of Pearl roundels.

Condition

This beautiful box is in superb condition for its age and has very sound structure.

All of the Mother of Pearl inlay and pewter stringing is present and secure.

All of the satin linings, being new, are in immaculate condition. They are clean, neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying.

The hinges are in perfect working order and the box locks securely.

Note

There is some minor wear to the Rosewood veneer on the corners of the lid. There are some minor stress lines to the veneer on the back of the box. There are some marks to the red paper on the bottom of the box. There is a light partial ring mark to the inside of the lid from where the box's original mixing bowl was once located. These flaws are commensurate with age and honest use and do not spoil the fabulous overall appearance of the box. Please view all of the photos provided.
