A beautiful Victorian jewellery box, circa 1890. Beautifully figured Walnut veneer plus Mother of Pearl and Abalone shell inlay. Newly refurbished interior with padded velvet panel and quality paper linings. Working lock and key.

This is a beautiful large Victorian jewellery box, dating to around 1890. It has a beautiful newly refurbished interior and its original working lock and key.
The Exterior
This box has a wonderful Walnut veneer which has a rich warm colour and beautiful figuration.
The lid has an inlaid Mother of Pearl cartouche and the keyhole has a matching inlaid escutcheon. Both have a stylish elongated diamond shape and both are set beautifully flush into the veneer.
The edges of the box are finished with dark ebonised veneer.
The box is complete with its original brass stop hinges which hold the lid upright. It also has its original solid brass working lock and key.
The bottom of the box has a new felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The Walnut veneer has been newly polished to bring back its original sheen.
The Interior
The interior has been newly refurbished by ourselves. The walls have high quality new red paper linings and the base of the compartment has a new padded burgundy velvet panel. The padding provides cushioned protection for jewellery.
The inside of the lid has its original, beautiful, quilted silk panel with deep silk buttoning. This was removed, cleaned and securely reattached.

Condition
This box is still in very good condition despite its 135 years of age. There are some minor fine superficial stress lines within the Walnut to the lid and some nibbles/wear to some of the ebonised edges. These minor flaws are commensurate with age and honest use and in no way affect the box's sound structure.
All of the Mother of Pearl and Abalone shell inlay is present and intact.
The hinges and lock are still in good working order.
The interior paper linings and velvet panel, being new, are in immaculate unused condition. There is minor light age related wear to the original silk panel within the lid.
Notes About Antique Locks
We would like to make you aware that antique locks can occasionally malfunction. They are already very old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks that may malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased.
Please ensure the lock is still working as soon as you receive the box. It will be checked again prior to posting.
