A lovely old Rosewood jewellery box with a fully refurbished interior. It dates to the late Victorian period, circa 1880/1890.

This is a lovely old Rosewood jewellery box with a fully refurbished interior. It dates to the late Victorian period, circa 1880/1890.
The Exterior
This box has beautiful Rosewood veneer which has a wonderful deep reddish brown colour and attractive figuration.
There is a very decorative inlaid cartouche to the lid which consists of both Mother of Pearl and Abalone shell. There is a beautiful complementary inlaid escutcheon to the keyhole.
The lid and front are further decorated with frames of inlaid pewter stringing.
The box is complete with its original brass 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright. It also has its original workibng brass lock and key.
The bottom of the box has an old replacement felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The Interior
The interior has a lift out storage tray with multiple compartments and beneath this is a larger single compartment. The two rear corner compartments have their original burgundy silk covered lids with Mother of Pearl knobs. The tray, lower compartment, plus the inside of the lid, have been recently refurbished with very decorative William Morris Persian floral paper linings. The colours of this paper complement the original silk to the lids in the tray.
Condition
This genuine old box is in good condition for its age. It has sound structure and no nasty cracks.
There are some tiny pieces of inlay missing but this doesn't spoil the beautiful overall appearance of the box.
The new interior linings are neatly fitted and in good clean condition.
There is some minor wear to the Rosewood veneer and some small pieces of veneer missing to a few areas along the edges of the box. None of this is overly noticeable as these areas have been stained to improve their appearance.
The hinges and lock are in good working order.
