Beautifully Lined Inlaid Antique Walnut Jewellery Box

This is a beautiful late Victorian jewellery box, dating to 1880/1890. It is complete with its original stunning satin-lined interior and its original working continental lock and key.

The Exterior

This box has a wonderful Walnut veneer which has a rich warm colour and beautiful figuration.

The lid and front have beautiful broad bands of inlay that feature superb geometric shapes. These beautiful inlaid bands are known as 'Berlin Strapwork'. There is further inlay to the edges of the lid and down the edges of the front of the box. The inlay consists of several varieties of wood and is set flush into the Walnut veneer.

There is a lovely inlaid diamond cartouche to the lid and a beautiful inlaid Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the keyhole.

The box is complete with its original brass stop hinges which hold the lid upright. It is also complete with its original working continental lock and key.

The bottom of the box has a soft felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.

The Continental Lock

This beautiful box has a superb continental lock which was designed to deter thieves from stealing its contents. It was cleverly designed so that its key could be turned TWICE, to both lock and unlock the box. The idea was that an intruder would believe the lock to be faulty when it did not open upon just one turn of the key! The lock can, however, be operated with just one turn of the key if desired.

This continental lock suggests that the box may be of French origin.

The Interior

The entire interior has its original stunning red satin linings which are beautifully pleated/ruched. The panels to the base of the compartment and to the inside of the lid are padded. These provide cushioned protection for your jewellery. The panel to the inside of the lid has beautiful satin covered buttoning and a central satin strip with loops.

The storage compartment is large and deep, providing ample space for a vast amount of jewellery. It will hold big pieces of jewellery such as broad bangles, watches and chunky beads etc.

History

This box was originally a very expensive Victorian ladies sewing/work box. It now makes a very beautiful and functional large jewellery box. The looped satin strip to the inside of the lid was designed to hold threads.

Condition

This beautiful box is still in lovely condition, despite its 130/140 years of age.

The interior linings are in remarkably fine condition for their age. They are still very neatly fitted, very clean, and have no splits or fraying.

The hinges and lock are still in good working order. The key securely locks the box.

The exterior is showing some signs of age and honest use, as we'd expect on a box of this age. There are a few old sympathetic repairs and a few minor dings/surface scratches. These are not overly unsightly and they do not spoil the beautiful overall appearance of the box. All of the inlay is present and intact.
