This is a beautifully inlaid antique jewellery box, made of solid Olivewood. It has its original working lock and key, plus its original interior mirror and linings.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Olivewood, details of which are given below. The Olivewood has a lovely aged patina and beautiful figuration.
The lid has beautiful inlaid decoration, featuring two marquetry inlaid Swallows in flight with olive sprigs in their beaks, and a stylish diagonal band of tesselated micro mosaic inlay. The Swallows are further decoarted with hand-painted details. The lock flap has a beautiful inlaid Swallow also. This is a sure sign of a high-quality box as most lock flaps are left undecorated.
The box is complete with its original hinges. It also has its original working lock and key and its original beautifully shaped angular feet.
The Swallow Symbolism
The Swallow has long been representative of the safe journey home of a loved one. The Swallows are carrying Olive sprigs which symbolise peace.
The Micro Mosaic Tesselated Inlay
This type of inlay is skillfully created with hundreds of tiny pieces of wood. It is painstakingly put together over many hours to form a beautiful mosaic pattern. Several varieties of wood are used, some of which are stained to add colour and dimension to the mosaic.
About Olivewood
Olivewood has a dinstinctive grain and rich colour. It has characteristic brown and yellow streaks which make for a beautiful contrast. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes.
Olivewood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density and it takes well to cutting and polishing.
The Olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem.
The Interior
The interior has two swing opening compartments and a further single larger compartment beneath. All three compartments have their original velvet linings. The velvet is beautiful petrol green shade.
The inside of the lid has its original fitted inset mirror, surrounded by a lovely oval inlaid frame.
Age
Late 19th century, circa 1890.
Condition
This wonderful box has sound structure and is in excellent condition for its 130 years of age. All of the inlay is still present and secure, and the hinges and lock are still in good working order.
The interior linings are in very fair condition for their age. They are predominantly intact with just some fraying along the bottom edges to the linings within the walls. The colour of the velvet is still vibrant.
There are some tiny specks of foxing to the mirror but it is predominantly clear.

We would like to make you aware that antique locks can occasionally malfunction. They are already very old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased.
