A lovely quality antique box with beautifully figured Walnut veneer. It started its life as an expensive twin compartment tea caddy and has been newly converted for functional jewellery storage. It is a wonderful piece of social history!

This is a lovely quality antique box with beautifully figured Walnut veneer. It started its life as an expensive twin compartment tea caddy and has been newly converted for functional jewellery storage. It is a wonderful piece of social history!
Age
Circa 1860/1870.
The Exterior
This box has a beautiful Walnut veneered finish and a very stylish sarcophagus shape. There is beautiful figuration to the Walnut all over. The box has a lovely plinth base and its original beautifully turned hardwood squat bun feet.
The box is complete with its original brass stop hinges which hold the lid upright. It also has its original brass lock.
Note: The lock is not functional and therefore has no key.
The Interior
The interior has been adapted and fully refurbished to make it functional for jewellery storage. The old tea caddy compartments have been removed and a new French polished hardwood tray has been added.
The base of the lower compartment plus the base of the new tray, have beautiful new padded gold satin panels. The padding provides cushioned protection for jewellery.
The walls of the compartments plus the inside of the lid, have new high-quality floral patterned paper linings. Two different black and whites shades have been used to create a beautifully contrasting momochrome effect.
Our Jewellery Box Restorer
The wonderful conversion and refurbishment of this box was carried out by our skilled box restorer, Jim. You can read about Jim and his restoration work by visiting our About Us page.
Condition
This beautiful box has sound structure and is still in very fair condition despite its 150-160 years of age. There is some light age related wear to the Walnut. A few small repairs to the Walnut have been carried out during the box's history. This is as we'd expect with a box of this age which has been loved and used. The minor flaws add to its charm in our opinion.
The interior satin panels and paper linings are in immaculate condition, being new.
The hinges are in good working order and the feet are securely attached.
