This is a superb high-quality antique jewellery box, dating to between 1890-1910. It was made in the Black Forest region, along the German/Swiss border.  It has ornate carved decoration and a beautifully refurbished interior. It also has a working lock and key.

The Exterior

This box is made of solid Walnut. It has an abundance of extremely ornate carved decoration, to the lid, front, sides and feet.

The lid has a beautiful large carved feature of two Partridges standing amongst foliage. The front and sides have lovely moulded panels with beautifully carved Ivy leaves and flowers. There is further carved scroll detail to all four feet of the box. All of this decoration is of a very high-quality, with exquisite crisp carving.

This box has a beautiful tall layered design with the interior compartments being placed on two levels. There are shallow graduating tiers on the lid and the edges of the box have a beautiful concave form. The feet of the box are also beautifully shaped.

The box has its original hinges and its original working lock and key. The lock is beautifully off-centre, having been placed in the front of the top right compartment. This is a wonderful rare feature of the box as most Black Forest boxes of this style have their locks located in the centre. As well as the off-centre lock being a lovely rare feature, its location and fixing have made it much more secure. The lock keeps on these types of boxes are usually on a central hinged flap, attached to the lid. The lock keep on this box has been directly fixed to the lid and is therefore much more stable and less prone to becoming loose/damaged.

The back of the box has some shallow punched numbers which read 906. This is possibly a model number.

The Interior

There are two swing opening compartments at the top and a further larger compartment beneath these. All of these have been beautifully refurbished by our skilled box restorer. Each has brand new satin linings to the walls and padded satin panels to the bases. The inside of the lid also has a new satin lining. The satin is a beautiful emerald green shade.

Notes About Antique Locks

We would like to make you aware that antique locks can occasionally malfunction. They are already very old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased. Please ensure the lock is working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.
