This is a high-quality vintage musical jewellery box, made in Japan in the 1950s. It has a lovely black lacquered finish and beautiful hand-painted decoration all over.

The Exterior

The box has a glossy black lacquered finish and is beautifully decorated with hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes. These include Mount Fuji, temples, mountains, sailing boats, a bridge, and trees and birds. This decoration is not only on the lid but also on all four sides of the box.

The painting is in numerous bright colours of red, orange, turquoise, blue, white, green, beige, brown, yellow and gold.

There are colourful iridescent pieces of exotic Abalone shell inlay, within the painted landscape on the lid. There is also a beautiful frame around the landscape that has further pieces of inlaid Abalone shell. The smallest pieces of this beautiful inlay have created a glittery, galaxy-like effect. The frame has beautiful gold painted borders.

All of the above decoration is of very high quality. It is among the finest that we have personally come across on a Japanese box of this type.

There is a beautifully shaped and finely engraved white metal escutcheon to the keyhole.

The box is complete with its quality white metal cantilever hinges and its original working lock and key.

The Interior

The interior has three storage compartments, a delightful little drawer, and a beautifully hand-painted mirror.

The top two compartments and storage drawer rise up on white metal cantilever hinges. This rise happens automatically when you lift up the lid. There is a further single compartment beneath these and the musical movement is nicely cased to the right of this.

The top compartments have beautiful hinged lids and the storage drawer is located between these. These compartments, plus the ledge of the movement's casing, have a black lacquered finish and hand-painted scenes, that complement the exterior's decoration. The lids and drawer front have their original ring handles. Beautiful new pink silk cord tassels have been attached to these.

A lovely vintage sliding dial clasp has been added to the ledge of the movement's casing. This securely holds the ledge in place, preventing it from falling off when the box is being moved around. The ledge can be removed with ease by simply sliding the dial around. It allows easy access to the movement, should it ever require attention in the future.

The mirror has been beautifully hand-painted. It features a Geisha girl with a parasol being drawn in a sedan chair, plus a temple and mountain seascape in the background. The Geisha scene is thickly painted, creating a raised 3-dimensional effect.

All of the compartments have their original velvet-like blue ribbed cord linings.

The Musical Movement

The movement plays Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. It is in very good condition and plays the tune beautifully. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.

Operating The Musical Movement

The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Five turns of the key are sufficient to play the tune in full.

Notes on Vintage Musical Movements and Locks

As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the key. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.

We would like to make you aware that vintage locks and movements occasionally malfunction. They are already very old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use.

We are not responsible for locks or movements that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding. Please ensure the lock and movement are still working as soon as you receive your box. They will be checked again prior to postage.

You can view our full returns policy which includes locks and movements, by visiting our Payments And Returns page.

Condition

This box is in very good vintage condition. It has sound structure and only minor light wear, commensurate with age and honest use.

The black lacquer is still in beautiful glossy condition which is remarkable given the age of the box. (On most old Japanese boxes of this type, the lacquer has dulled/become cloudy in patches and has often suffered numerous chips and scratches).

The interior ribbed cord linings are still in very good condition also. They are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. They are clean overall and have only minor light stains that are not very evident.

The mirror is securely fitted and has no chips or cracks. It has some age-related 'foxing' as is usually the case with old mirrors, but you can still clearly see yourself in it.

All of the hinges are in good working order and the key securely locks the box.
