A beautiful antique Victorian jewellery box, circa 1840-1860. Wonderful Rosewood and exotic Amboyna wood veneer plus a stunning large inlaid Cornucopia feature on the lid. The interior has been partially refurbished with bespoke red satin linings. Working lock and key.

This is an absolutely beautiful Victorian jewellery box, dating to between 1840-1860. It has beautiful Rosewood and Amboyna wood veneer, plus an abundance of stunning inlay on the lid. The interior has been beautifully refurbished yet also retains some original linings. The box has a working lock and key.
The Exterior
This box has beautiful Rosewood veneer that has a rich warm colour and lovely figuration. The lid has a large exotic Amboyna wood veneered panel which is decorated with a stunnng large inlaid Cornucopia. There is also a beautifully inlaid flower spray to the left of this, plus very decorative inlaid frames around both the Cornucopia and the edges of the lid. The inlay consists of beautiful Mother of Pearl, various colourful woods, and also white metal which is likely silver but not tested/guaranteed.
There is a decorative diamond shaped inlaid metal escutcheon to the keyhole.
The bottom of the box has a new soft felt covering that will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The box is complete with its original stop hinges which hold the lid upright. It also has its original fully working lock and key.
The Cornucopia Symbolism
The Cornucopia (Horn of Plenty) is an ancient symbol of abundance. Its English use is often used to describe a large or varied collection of things, hence the Cornucopia feature being very apt for a jewellery box!
The Interior
The interior has multiple jewellery storage compartments and has been partially refurbished by our very skilled box restorer. It has its original lift out hardwood storage tray at the top (which has seven compartments and metal ring pulls), and beneath this is a further large single compartment.
The large front centre compartment in the tray has its original red silk covered lid with braided cord detail and silk pull tab. All of the compartments have beautiful new red satin linings.
All of the interior wood / top edges and sides of the tray, have a new ebonised finish.
The compartments in the tray are of various shapes and sizes - ideal for keeping different size pieces of jewellery separate. The smallest are perfect for rings, earrings, pendants and brooches. The rear narrow compartment is ideal for laying out chains/necklaces and the largest front centre compartment is ideal for narrow bangles and/or watches. The large single compartment beneath the tray is deep enough to hold broad bangles, watches and chunky beads.
The bottom of the tray has a new felt covering which matches that on the bottom of the box.
The inside of the lid has its original fitted bevelled edged mirror, secure within its original red satin covered frame. There is a beautiful fancy ruffled red silk panel around the mirror.

Condition
This beautiful box is in excellent condition. It has sound structure and only minor light wear that is commensurate with age and honest use.
All of the veneer and inlay is still present and intact.
The hinges and lock are still in good working order. The key securely locks the box.
All of the new satin panels are in immaculate condition, being new. There is minor wear to the original silk within the lid, and some minor foxing to the mirror.

We would like to make you aware that antique locks can occasionally malfunction. They are already very old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use.
We are not responsible for locks that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased. Please ensure the lock is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.
