A beautiful late Victorian jewellery box, circa 1880/90. Warm Walnut veneer with beautiful figuration. Partially restored and refurbished interior with new padded velvet panels. Working lock and key.
This is a beautiful late Victorian jewellery box, dating to 1880/1890. It has a lovely newly refurbished interior and its original working lock.
The Exterior
This box has a wonderful Walnut veneer which has a rich warm colour and beautiful figuration.
The lid has its original inset handle and the keyhole has its original shield shaped escutcheon. Both are made of a non precious white metal.
The edges of the box/top edges of the interior, have a nice ebonised finish.
The box is complete with its original stop hinges which hold the lid upright. It is also complete with its original working lock which comes with a replacement key.
The bottom of the box has its original black hessian covering.
The Interior
The interior has been restored and partially refurbished. It has its original removable storage tray which has been newly sanded, stained and varnished.
The tray has seven storage compartments of varying shapes and sizes. The front compartment is the ideal shape and size for laying out chains and necklaces. The centre and rear compartments are an ideal size for small pieces of jewellery such as rings, brooches, earrings and pendants. The centre compartments have their original red satin covered lids. The backs of the lids have new red paper linings and the bottom of the storage tray has a new green felt covering. This will protect the surfaces of furniture.
There is a large deep and roomy single compartment beneath the storage tray. This will hold a vast amount of jewellery, including large pieces such as broad bangles, watches and chunky beads.
All of the compartments have new padded burgundy velvet panels and red paper linings. The padded velvet base panels provide cushioned protection for jewellery.
The inside of the lid has its original ruched red satin panel and the surrounding walls have new red paper linings which match those in the compartments.
Condition
This box is still in wonderful condition! It has sound structure and only minor light wear, commensurate with age and honest use.
The hinges and lock are still in good working order. (The lock is a little stiff).
All of the new velvet and paper linings are in clean and unworn condition, being new.
There is some minor wear to the original satin.
There is some wear around the edges of the hessian covering to the bottom of the box.

We would like to make you aware that antique locks can occasionally malfunction. They are already very old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased.
Please ensure the lock is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

History
This beautiful box started its life as a wonderful combined jewellery/sewing box. We have configured the storage tray (made adaptations to create some larger compartments) to make it more practical for jewellery storage. We have, however, kept some of its original features, namely the satin covered lids; the pins/needles holder (in front of the centre compartment), and the satin covered fixed block in the rear centre compartment.

International postage is £30 by Royal Mail International Tracked and/or Signed For postage. Delivery is fast, within 3-5 working days to Europe and 5-7 working days to the rest of the world. Delivery may be longer depending on the speed of your local postal service and/or if your parcel has to go through customs. Please note that we cannot deliver to international PO boxes as we use a secure insured postal service that requires a signature.
