This is an absolutely beautiful Victorian jewellery box, dating to 1870/1880. The interior has been beautifully refurbished yet also retains some original linings. The box has a working lock and key.

The Exterior

This box has beautiful Rosewood veneer that has a rich warm colour and stunning figuration. The lid and front have large inlaid Mother of Pearl features and there is a complementary inlaid Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the keyhole. The pearl has a lovely iridescent shine! The lid and front are further decorated with frames of inlaid pewter stringing.

The bottom of the box has a soft felt covering that will protect the surfaces of furniture.

The box is complete with its original stop hinges which hold the lid upright. It also has a fully working lock. The lock is a genuine Victorian period replacement which has its original fitted key.

A press cutting thought to be taken from a 1960s Cambridgeshire newspaper was found in this box during its refurbishment. This is likely a connection to a previous owner and is a wonderful piece of social history! The cutting has an article of a lady reminiscing over her 60-year career in the clothing and drapery business. She also speaks about her memories of the 1920s fashion trends. On the reverse, it has soccer news and fixtures. The cutting has been laminated to preserve its good condition and is included in the sale of this box.

The Interior

The entire interior has been newly refurbished and looks absolutely stunning! It also features some of its original linings. All of the refurbishment has been carried out by our very skilled box restorer.

There is a new removable hardwood storage tray at the top that has been beautifully French polished and stained. The tray has three large storage compartments that are an ideal size and depth for narrow/medium width bangles, bracelets, watches and other jewellery. These lovely beautifully partitioned compartments enable you to keep specific types of jewellery separate - perhaps laying out chains and necklaces in one, keeping smaller pieces such as rings, earrings and pendants etc in another, and larger pieces such as bracelets and bangles in the remaining.

There is a large spacious single compartment beneath the tray. This will hold a good amount of jewellery. It is deep enough and roomy enough to store larger pieces of jewellery such as broad bangles and watches, and chunky beads.

All of the compartments have new bespoke handmade satin panels. The panels to the bases are padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery. The tray has lovely new textured ribbon pulls which enable you to lift it out of the box with ease. The bottom of the tray has a new felt covering.

The top section of the walls to the lower compartment have new high-quality floral patterned paper linings. Please see the close up image provided to see the pattern in greater detail.

The inside of the lid has a matching padded satin panel, plus its original antique patterned paper linings to the walls. This paper has a lovely dotted crosshatch/star print. It is a beautiful original feature of the interior and is in such lovely condition that we left it in situ.

The satin is a beautiful raspberry red shade. The new paper linings are a light cream shade with contrasting darker cream floral motifs.

Condition

This beautiful box is in excellent condition. It has sound structure and only minor light wear that is commensurate with age and honest use.

All of the Mother of Pearl inlay is still present.

The hinges and lock are still in good working order. The key securely locks the box.

All of the refurbished satin panels and paper linings are in immaculate condition, being new. There is one teeny manufacturing flaw to the satin of the panel to the inside of the lid. This is barely noticeable.
