This is a wonderful old Victorian jewellery box with a refurbished interior and an abundance of very skilled pokerwork decoration, including symbolic flowers. It dates to the late 19th century, circa 1880/1890. It is in superb condition despite its age.

This is a wonderful old Victorian jewellery box with a refurbished interior and an abundance of very skilled pokerwork decoration, including symbolic flowers. It dates to the late 19th century, circa 1880/1890. It is in superb condition despite its age.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Sycamore wood and is profusely decorated with pokerwork (also known as pyrography) on the lid plus all four sides. The pokerwork to the lid features a young Victorian lady in traditional dress and period hairstyle. She sits within a beautiful oval frame with very pretty pansies on either side of this. The sides of the box are also fully decorated with these pretty pokerwork pansies.
The lid and plinthed base have very stylish scalloped edges.
The box has a securely fitting lid and its original brass hinges.
The Pokerwork Design
The design of this box with its Victorian bust is likely unique and probably depicts a real Victorian lady. She may be the lady whom the box was gifted to, or her bust placed on the box in memory of her.
The Pansy Symbolism
The pansy, derived from the French word pensée for 'thought', is symbolic of thoughts, remembrance and constant affection. This symbolism dates back to Victorian period. To the original owner of this box it is saying 'think of me' and signals that the recepient is constantly on the giver's mind.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment. The base of this, as well as the inside of the lid, have been beautifully refurbished with new vibrant emerald green satin panels. The panels are padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery. The walls of the compartment have new quality paper linings.
Condition
This box has sound structure and is still in excellent condition, despite its 130-140 years of age. There is some minor fading to the pokerwork detail in a few areas on the bust.
The interior linings, being new, are in immaculate condition.
