A wonderful large antique jewellery box, dating to the late Victorian period. Very attractive Rosewood veneer and superb inlaid decoration. The interior has been fully refurbished.

This is a wonderful antique Rosewood jewellery box with a fully refurbished interior. It dates to the late Victorian period, circa 1880/1890.
The Exterior
This box has beautiful Rosewood veneer which has a wonderful deep reddish brown hue and attractive figuration.
There is a large diamond shaped inlaid cartouche to the lid which is extremely decorative. This consists of both Mother of Pearl and Abalone shell. The cartouche is beautifully finished with a frame of inlaid pewter stringing. There is a beautiful matching inlaid escutcheon to the keyhole.
The box is complete with its original brass 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright.
The bottom of the box has an old replacement felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The lock and lock keep have been replaced at some point during the box's history. The 'new' lock and keep are solid brass. An antique replacement key from the Victorian period has been fitted to the lock which is in good working order.
The Interior
The interior has a lift out storage tray with multiple compartments and beneath this is a larger single compartment. Three of the tray's compartments have their original lilac silk covered lids with Mother of Pearl knobs. The tray, lower compartment, plus the inside of the lid are all fully refurbished with decorative lilac/blue patterned paper linings. The colours of this paper complement the original silk to the lids in the tray. The bottom of the tray plus the backs of the lids have new paper coverings.
The refurbishment is fairly recent, estimated to have been carried out within the last 10-15 years.
Condition
This genuine old box is in very good condition for its age. It has sound structure and no nasty cracks.
All of the inlaid decoration is present and intact, bar one tiny chip to the keyhole's escutcheon.
The new interior linings are neatly fitted and in good clean condition.
There are some thin slivers of veneer missing to the left of the lock and above the left hinge. There are some small pieces of veneer missing to a few areas along the edges of the lid/bottom of the box, and a few old repairs to the veneer along the bottom edges of the box. None of this is overly noticeable as these areas have been stained to improve their appearance.
The hinges and lock are in good working order.
