This is a superb high-quality vintage leather jewellery box, made in Florence, Italy. It has the leather artisan's signature on the bottom and is complete with its original working lock and key. It dates to the 1940s and is in excellent condition for its age.
The Exterior
This box has a wonderful real leather finish which has an abundance of beautiful tooled decoration on the lid and front side. The decoration features beautifully embossed Neoclassical baskets of abundance, the baskets being full of multi-petaled wildflowers.
The box is complete with its original hinges, plus its original working lock and key. The hinges are quality 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright.
The bottom of the box has its original wooden feet and its original fabric covering.
There is a Cyrillic signature on the bottom of the box which translates to Setoyan, an Armenian family name. This is likely to be the signature of the individual master artisan responsible for the tooled leather finish. Italian leather workshops, particularly those in manufacture during the WWII period, were thriving global export businesses. They employed skilled immigrant artisans, including many Armenian master leather crafters and toolers who settled across Western Europe.
This box is likely the only one of its kind with this particulat artisan's signature. No other boxes with this signature exist on the internet. (Information correct as of 2/8/26).
This fabulous box was made in Firenze, more commonly known as Florence in England. Florence is the capital of the region of Tuscany. It was founded in 59BC and its name derives from the original Latin 'Florentia'.
The Interior
The interior (both the compartment and inside of the lid) has its original velvet linings.
Condition
This box is still in very good condition, despite its 80 years of age. It has sound structure and no damage. There are some age related marks and wear to the leather and interior velvet linings. This is as we'd expect for a box of this age which has been loved and used for its purpose.
The lock and hinges are still in very good working order. The key securely locks the box.
