A beautiful antique jewellery box, dating to around 1900. Made in Israel for the Jerusalem tourist market. The interior has been fully refurbished, ensuring the box is fully functional for jewellery storage.

This is a beautifully refurbished antique jewellery box, dating to around 1900. It was made in Israel for the Jerusalem tourist market. The interior has been fully refurbished as the original linings had deteriorated. The refurbishment of this box has made it fully functional for jewellery storage again.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Olivewood, details of which are given below. The Olivewood has a beautiful colour, aged patina, and figuration.
JERUSALEM is transfer printed upon the lid and a colourful harwood inlaid frame surrounds this.
The box is complete with its original hinges.
The bottom of the box has a new felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
Please note the lock is not functional and therefore has no key.
The Interior
The interior has been fully refurbished by ourselves.
The base of the compartment has a new emerald green velvet panel, padded to provide cushioned protection for jewellery.
The rear panel inside the lid has a beautiful new foliage printed paper lining, surrounded by beautiful silver silk cord trim.
The walls to the compartment and inside lid have high-quality green paper linings to complement the printed paper and velvet panel.
We chose a lovely combination of various green linings in recognition of the Olivewood tree. There is evidence pointing to Israel and surrounding areas being the first regions to cultivate Olives around 7000 years ago.
About Olivewood
Olivewood has a distinctive grain and rich colour which gives it a beautiful appearance. It has characteristic brown and yellow streaks which make for a beautiful contrast. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes. Olivewood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density and it takes well to cutting and polishing. The Olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterraen. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jersualem.
Condition
This lovely old box is still in good condition and has sound structure.
The interior linings, being new, are in immaculate clean unused condition.
The hinges are still in good working order and all of the inlaid decoration is secure.
There is some minor light wear to the Olivewood in a few areas and a small piece of Olivewood missing to the left of the lock keep.
