A beautiful antique French Rosewood jewellery box, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1870/1880. Beautiful inlaid decoration to the lid and stunning original quilted silk panels and linings to the interior.

This is a beautiful antique French Rosewood jewellery box, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1870/1880.
The Exterior
This box has is made of solid Rosewood. It has stunning inlaid decoration to the lid and a beautiful stylish plinth base. The inlay is made from a variety of materials, namely silver, Mother of Pearl and bone. It features a beautiful spray of leafy flowers and a very pretty dragonfly.
The front of the box has inlaid white metal stringing and an inlaid brass escutcheon to the keyhole.
The body of the box has beautiful canted/sculptured corners.
The box is complete with its original brass lock and high-quality piano hinge. Please note the lock is temperamental and therefore no key is supplied with this box.
The bottom of the box has an old replacement felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The Interior
The interior is completely original and still in wonderful condition for its age! The inside of the lid and base of the compartment have their original stunning quilted silk panels. These are plumply padded and complete with their beautiful silk covered buttons. The walls are lined with the same silk which is a beautiful old powder blue shade.
The compartment is deep and will hold large pieces of jewellery such as broad bangles, watches and chunky beads.
Condition
This box is in very good condition for its age. It has sound structure and no cracks.
All of the inlay is still present, intact and securely seated.
The interior silk linings and panels have some minor age related light wear/light stains. They are still neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. It is rare to find these very old quilted silk panels and linings in such remarkably good condition.
The hinge is still in good working order.
There is some minor wear to the Rosewood to the bottom left and right corners of the lid.
Note
There was originally some inlaid stringing around the edges of the lid. This has been lost over the years. This doesn't detract from the lid's beautiful appearance and indeed the fine narrow recesses where the stringing sat are actually quite decorative.
