This is a beautiful antique Walnut jewellery box with decorative inlay and a fully refurbished velvet lined interior. It dates to the late Victorian period, circa 1880/1890.

This is a beautiful antique Walnut jewellery box with decorative inlay and a fully refurbished velvet lined compartment. It dates to the late Victorian period, circa 1880/1890.
The Exterior
This box has beautiful Walnut veneer and very attractive inlaid 'Berlin Strapwork' bands which run across the lid and down the front of the box. The bands have a beautiful 'Van Dyke' zig zag pattern. All of the inlay is made of various colourful hardwoods.
The box is complete with its original working brass lock and key. It also has its original brass stop hinges which hold the lid upright.
The bottom of the box has a new felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
All of the exterior wood has been newly polished.
About Berlin Strapwork Inlay
This is a beautiful type of inlay, consisting of several varieties of colourful hardwoods. Each inlaid band is made up of hundreds of small pieces of wood, intricately placed to create beautiful symmetrical or asymmetrical patterns. The bands were manufactured in German specialist workshops and exported across Europe during the late 19th century for box makers to adorn their goods with.
The Interior
The interior has a single fully refurbished compartment. The base of the compartment has a new plush deep purple velvet panel, this being padded to provide cushioned protection for jewellery. The interior walls have new unpadded matching deep purple velvet linings. The compartment is deep enough to store large pieces of jewellery such as broad bangles and watches.
The new velvet has a beautiful slightly aged appearance which compliments the age of the box.
The inside of the lid has beautiful Mahogany veneer which has a wondeful rich colour.
The once faded top edges of the lid and compartment have been carefully re-stained, beautifully restoring the appearance of their original ebonised finish.
Condition
This lovely old box is in good condition for its age. It has sound structure and no cracks. All of the inlay is securely seated.
The veneer/inlay has some age related wear and fine surface scratches. A few small pieces of missing inlay/veneer have been replaced over the years.
The interior linings, being new, are in clean unused condition.
