This is a beautiful antique jewellery box, veneered with Walnut and exotic fruitwoods. It dates to the late Victorian period, circa 1890, and is complete with its original working lock and key. A very attractive box!

The Exterior

The lid and front of this beautiful box are veneered with several varieties of exotic fruitwoods. The veneer has been cut into bands of various widths and skillfully arranged to create a very attractive stripe pattern.

The sides and rear of the box have beautiful Walnut veneer which has knots and lovely figuration.

Although antique, the beautiful striped patterning gives the box a contemporary look. It will therefore look great in a home with modern decor and furniture.

The bottom of the box is also nicely finished with beautiful Mahogany veneer.

The interior edges of the box have a lovely dark ebonised finish.

The box is complete with its original working lock and decorative shaped key. It also has its original brass 'stop' hinges which hold the lid upright.

A new gold tassel has been added to the key to complement the interior linings and brass hinges/lock.

The Interior

The interior has a single storage compartment which has been professionally refurbished in recent years. Both the compartment and the inside of the lid have relatively new high-quality fabric linings. The linings are textured and have a shimmery bronze/gold marbled pattern. The linings have obviously been thoughtfully chosen to complement the contemporary look of the box.

The compartment is deep enough and roomy enough to hold large pieces of jewellery such as bangles, watches and chunky beads.

This box was originally designed to store gloves. It would've once sat on a Victorian lady's dressing table, storing her expensive gloves. It is a wonderful piece of social history that now makes beautiful storage for jewellery!

The box has sound structure and is in very good condition for its 130 years of age.

There are two small old repairs to the veneer on the box which have been done fairly well. These are on the left side (centre) of the lid and the front right corner of the lid. These areas have been stained and polished smooth.

The right side of the lid is ever so slightly warped.

The above flaws are in no way unsightly but are being pointed out to give you a thorough and honest description of the box. They do not spoil the overall beautiful appearance of the box and in our opinion, they add to its charm. Please view all of the photos provided.

The hinges and lock are in good working order. The key securely locks the box.

The interior linings, being fairly new, are in beautiful clean condition and are very neatly fitted.
