This is a beautiful antique jewellery box with a wonderful new padded velvet panel in the compartment. It dates to the 19th century, circa 1860s/1870s.
The Exterior
This box has beautifully figured Mahogany veneer. It has a beautiful inlaid Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the keyhole and a lovely inlaid bone cartouche on the lid.
The bottom of the box has a new felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The box has its original stop hinges that hold the lid upright, plus its original lock.
Note: The lock is not functional and therefore no key is present.
The Interior
The base of the compartment has a beautiful new red velvet panel which complements the original red textured linings to the surrounding walls and inside of the lid. These linings have a leather like appearance. The panel is plumply padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery, and its reverse side has a red paper backing. The panel has been fabricated in such a way as to make it removable. Whilst it allows practical soft storage for jewellery, it can also be removed to allow the original textured lining in the base of the compartment to be viewed.
Condition
This beautiful box is in excellent condition. It has sound structure and no nasty damage. There is a minor fine hairline across the centre of the lid which isn't overly noticeable and in no way spoils the beautiful overall appearance of the box.
The interior velvet panel, being new, is in immaculate condition.
There is some minor wear and some minor marks to the original textured red paper linings.
History
This box was originally an expensive Victorian tea caddy. Its dividing partition was removed and a new padded velvet panel introduced, to make it into a functional box for jewellery storage. It is a wonderful piece of social history!
