This is a superb vintage Black Forest jewellery box, originating from Grindelwald in Switzerland. It dates to the 1950s and is a beautiful musical box that plays 'Ma Petite Folie' (My Little Folly). The box has its original working lock and key, and the interior has a beautiful new emerald green padded velvet panel.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid wood and is beautifully shaped with its lovely flowing curves. There is a superb large high relief carving of a beautiful Edelweiss flower upon the lid, surrounded by hand-carved scroll motifs. Further hand-carved leaves decorate the front and sides of the box.
The box is complete with its original 'stop' hinges that hold the lid upright, plus its original working lock and key. It stands raised on its original beautifully turned hardwood feet.
The bottom of the box has retained its original song title label.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment. We have added a beautiful bespoke made emerald green velvet panel to the base of the compartment. This is padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery. The panel is removable and can be lifted out of the box by its lovely satin ribbon pull. We have made a removable panel so that the musical movement beneath it can be accessed should it ever require attention. The back of the panel has a quality paper covering with a multiple leaf print. This was chosen to complement the organic motifs on the box.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays 'Ma Petite Folie' (My Little Folly), a term used to describe a minor guilty pleasure, a whim or extravagance, or a cherished quirk! Ma Petite Folie is a popular French song from the 1950s, recorded by Line Renaud in 1953. It is a lighthearted declaration of love, describing a partner who turns life upside down with their charm and eccentricity.
The movement is in good working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo.
We are unsure as to the meaning of 'Maria Chapdeleine' on the song title label. It may in some way relate to the best known novel of French writer Louis Hemon from 1913 titled 'Maria Chapdelaine'. There are songs that reference Maria Chapdelaine on compilation albums which include Ma Petite Folie.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Four turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
Care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Overwinding will result in the movement malfunctioning. We are not responsible for movements that are overwound or for movements that deteriorate from further age and use once boxes are purchased.
Please check the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.
Please read our returns policy which includes our policy on musical movements.
