A beautiful vintage lacquered musical jewellery box, made in Japan in the 1960s. The interior has its original ballerina and linings. Complete with working lock and key.

This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box, made in Japan in the 1960s. The interior has its original ballerina and linings.
The Exterior
The box has a lovely black lacquered finish and is beautifully decorated with hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes. These include mountains/hills, temples, sailing boats, trees, birds and a bridge. The decoration is on both the lid and front of the box.
There is a pretty engraved white metal escutcheon to the keyhole.
The lid has its original hinges and the box has its original working lock and key.
The Interior
The interior has two storage compartments and a revolving resin ballerina. It also has its original fitted mirrors to the inside of the lid.
The smaller compartment at the top of the interior automatically rises when you lift up the lid. It rises via its original white metal cantilever hinges. The compartment has a lid with a black lacquered finish and gold hand-painted sailing boats, waves and birds. This complements the decoration on the front of the box.
There is a further larger and deeper compartment beneath the upper compartment, and further shallow storage space in the tray to the right where the ballerina stands.
Both compartments plus the right hand side tray, have their original velvet-like linings. The inside of the lid to the left of the mirror, has its original textured patterned fabric panel with silk stitching. This is surrounded by the same velvet-like linings in the compartments and tray. The linings are a beautiful cerise pink colour.
The mirror is nicely framed with its original braided pink silk cord trim.
The musical movement is concealed beneath the right hand side tray where the ballerina is located. The tray is removable, allowing access to the movement should it ever require attention in the future. Please lift the ballerina from her post before removing the tray.
The Ballerina has a hand-painted gold bustier and red shoes, and a white net skirt with red polka dots. She starts revolving when the musical movement is wound.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays a sweet joyful tune. We have not been able to decipher the tune, however, you can listen to it playing on our Facebook video. Please click on the link below or contact us to request the video via email or WhatsApp.

Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Six turns of the key are sufficient to play the tune in full.
The movement is in good working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements And Locks
Care must be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
Vintage movements and locks are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally malfunction or deteriorate over time.
We are not responsible for movements and locks that may deteriorate/malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please ensure the movement and lock are still working as soon as you receive your box. They will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This box is in very good vintage condition. It has sound structure and only minor light wear which is commensurate with age and honest use.
Some of the lacquered finish has slightly dulled in places.
The interior linings are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. They have some minor wear and light marks from previous use.
The mirrors have a little age related speckled cloudiness. This is often the case with these old Japanese boxes. The three mirrors give the appearance of three ballerinas in their reflections.
The hinges and lock are all in good working order.
(The tassell is missing from the metal ring on the interior top compartment's lid).
