This is a beautiful large antique jewellery box, dating to 1880/1890. It is complete with its original working lock and key.
This box has a beautiful Rosewood veneer which has a lovely warm rich colour. It has beautiful figuration which is particularly nice on the sides of the box.
There is a lovely inlaid Mother of Pearl cartouche on the lid, plus a matching inlaid Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the keyhole. Both of these have inlaid Pewter frames.
The box is complete with its original brass 'stop' hinges. These prevent the lid from falling back. It is also complete with its original working brass lock and key.
The bottom of the box has a new cushioned felt covering. This will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The top front section of the interior has a removable tray which has six storage compartments. Four of these compartments have wooden lids which are complete with their original bone handles. The lids and bases of the compartments have textured leather like coverings. The tray has its original circular brass lift up handles.
The top rear section of the interior has four further compartments, the bases of which have the same coverings as above.
There is a further large storage compartment beneath the top storage tray/top rear section. This is a roomy compartment where letters/photos or large pieces of jewellery such as watches/beads can be stored.
The inside of the lid has its original red velvet covering and fancy gold brocade trim. The bottom interior wall beneath this, has a new black felt covering. The rest of the walls have their original black leather effect coverings.
There is a lovely drawer in the base of the box, located at the bottom of the right side. This has 3 storage compartments. The compartments have their original blue velvet linings and dividers. The dividers and interior walls of the drawer, have their original black leather effect coverings. The drawer also has its original bone handle which matches those to the storage tray.
The drawer is secured by a gold metal rod and will not slide out when you lift the box up/carry it around. The rod is within the right side of the box, the top of which can be seen next to the storage tray. You simply pull the rod out to release the drawer.
The bottom of the drawer has 20/- pencilled onto it (and above this 60/- crossed through). This is probably what a retailer was charging for the box. The 20/- equates to roughly £360 in today's money.
This wonderful large box is in good condition for its 120/130 years of age. There is some general age related wear and some surface scratches to the veneer, and a small piece of veneer is missing at the bottom back left corner of the box. This is not very noticeable. There is a fine hairline crack in the bottom of the box but this does not affect its sound structure. Please see image 11.
The interior is still in nice condition overall. There is some wear to the black leather effect coverings to the walls inside the lid and drawer.
The hinges are in perfect working order and the box locks securely with its key.
