Pretty Japanese Musical Jewellery Box With Roses

Please contact us if you are looking for a similar box and we will endeavour to source one for you!

This is a very pretty vintage musical jewellery box, made in Japan in the 1950s/1960s. It has its original working lock and key and is in very good clean condition.

The Exterior

The box has a beautiful cream lacquered finish and stunning painted vivid red Roses. There is a large Rose on the lid which is in full bloom and two lovely budded Roses. The stems and leaves are painted in two shades of green. The Roses and leaves, particularly the large Rose on the lid, have a wonderful raised texture. This texture has given them a lovely three-dimensional effect.

There are stylish blue and gold painted lines on both the lid and front of the box. These too have a raised texture.

There is a pretty engraved metal escutcheon to the keyhole and the box is complete with its original working lock and key. It also has its original stop hinges which hold the lid upright.

The box stands raised on beautifully shaped feet.

The bottom of the box has a handwritten song title label.

The Interior

The interior has a deep compartment on the left and a shallower one on the right which is above the musical movement.

The inside of the lid has a lovely clear mirror.

Both compartments, plus the inside of the lid, have colourful vibrant pink linings. The linings are plush brushed cord and they have a beautiful ribbed texture.

The Musical Movement

The movement plays 'Fascination'. This is a popular Waltz tune, composed in 1904 by Fermo Dante Marchetti. With its English lyrics written by Dick Manning, it has been recorded as a song by various artists such as Nat King Cole, Dick Jacobs and David Carroll. All of these versions made it into the charts.

Operating The Musical Movement

The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 7-8 turns of the key are required to play the tune in full.

The movement is in good working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement is fully unwound.

Notes On Vintage Musical Movements And Locks

Care must be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.

Vintage movements and locks are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally malfunction and/or deteriorate over time.

We are not responsible for movements and locks that may deteriorate or malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.

Please ensure the movement and lock are still working as soon as you receive your box. They will be checked again prior to posting.

You can view our full returns policy which includes musical movements and locks, by visiting our Payments And Returns page.

Condition

This box is in excellent vintage condition with very little wear despite its age. It is structurally sound and has no damage.

The lacquer still has a glossy sheen which is wonderful as this often dulls over time. There are a few minor manufacturing imperfections within the lacquer which are not overly noticeable. The lacquer is in amazing condition overall. The lacquer on most boxes of this age has usually suffered numerous chips and scuffs. This particular box has obviously been well cared for.

There is no loss of paint to the Roses, stems or leaves, and their colours are still vibrant.

The interior linings are very clean. They are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. They have obviously seen very little use.

The mirror is still beautifully clear and has no chips or cracks.

The hinges and lock are still in very good working order.
