This is a beautifully decorated rare Japanese jewellery box which is still in its original shipping carton. It has barely been used, if ever, and hence it is still in excellent condition.

The Exterior

The box has a glossy burgundy lacquered finish and is decorated all over with beautiful hand-painted Japanese landscape scenes. These scenes include Mount Fuji, a temple, a bridge and other motifs.

The scene on the lid is surrounded by a beautiful frame of inlaid Abalone shell. This is colourful and has a beautiful irridescent shine. The front and both sides of the box also feature hand-painted scenes.

There is a pretty engraved silver metal escutcheon to the keyhole.

The box is complete with its original hinges and original working lock and key.

The Interior

The interior has a compartment at the top. This raises up on its own accord as you open the lid of the box. It is attached to quality cantilever hinges which allow this automatic lift-up mechanism. The compartment has two lids with polished hinges and the lids are complete with their original ring handles and tassels. They have a burgundy lacquered finished and hand-painted scenes, in keeping with that on the box's exterior.

There is a further compartment beneath those at the top and the musical movement is concealed beneath a black lacquered ledge to the right of this. There is a ring storage section to the front of this area.

The inside of the lid has a fitted mirror with further hand-painted decoration. It again features Mount Fuji and also an island with trees.

The compartments and ring storage have their original orange/red ribbed cord linings and the mirror is beautifully framed with the same.

The Musical Movement

The movement plays the tune 'FLEDERMAUS' as stated on the shipping carton.

Operating The Movement

Five turns of the key are sufficient to wind up the musical movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.

Notes On Vintage Musical Movements and Locks

As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.

Vintage movements/locks are already old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally deteriorate or malfunction over time.

We are not responsible for movements/locks that may deteriorate/malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.

Please check the movement and lock as soon as you receive your box. They will be checked again prior to posting.

Please read our returns policy which includes our policy on musical movements and locks.

Date

Mid 1940s.

Maker

Dayson (later spelt Daysun - from the 1950s onwards).

Condition

This lovely box is in excellent condition for its 70 plus years of age. It has sound structure and the musical movement and lock are in good working order.

The colours of the paint are still vivid.

The interior cord linings are still neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying.

The mirror is lovely and has no chips or cracks. It has some 'foxing' in areas as we'd expect from its age.

History

This box was made just after the 2nd World War when goods imported from Japan were marked 'FOREIGN'. It was thought that if they were marked 'Japan' they would be boycotted by much of the British population due to the war.

The box originally cost 50 shillings which was a lot of money at this period in time. In 1950, 20 shillings would equate to £22.50 in today's money, making the original cost of the box around £56.25.
