Superb Part Refurbished Victorian Black Forest Jewellery Box

This is a beautiful part refurbished late Victorian jewellery box from the Black Forest region. It has stunning hand-carved decoration and its original working lock and key.

The Exterior

The wood has a beautiful dark mahogany stain. There are superb crisp hand carvings to the lid and front, including beautiful flowers, leaves, and buckled straps. The flowers and foliage have a 3-dimensional high relief form. The surfaces of the lid and all four sides have a beautifully carved bark and wood knot effect finish.

The box is complete with its original hinges, and its original working continental lock and key.

The box stands raised on its original turned dome feet.

As you can see, the workmanship of this box is of a very high standard.

Details of the Continental Lock

This box has a wonderful continental lock which was designed to deter thieves from stealing its contents. It was cleverly designed so that its key could be turned TWICE to both lock and unlock the box. The idea was that an intruder would believe the lock to be faulty when it did not open upon just one turn! The lock can, however, be operated with just one turn if desired.

Date

This box dates to the late 19th century, circa 1880, possibly a little earlier.

The Interior

The interior has been partially refurbished by our skilled box restorer. There is a new padded blue satin panel to the base of the compartment, and new matching satin panels to the walls. The padded panel provides cushioned protection for jewellery.

The inside of the lid has its original dark blue padded velvet panel and surrounding lighter blue silk cord trim. This is an original feature of the box, and as it is still in lovely condition it has not been replaced.

Notes About Antique Locks

We would like to make you aware that antique locks can occasionally malfunction. They are already very old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use.

We are not responsible for locks that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased.

Please ensure the lock is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to postage.

You can view our full returns policy which includes locks by visiting our Payments And Returns page.

Condition

This wonderful box is in very good condition for its 140 (or more) years of age. It has sound structure and very little wear. Most of the wear is on the bottom of the box.

The hinges and lock are in good working order. The lock is a little stiff.

The interior new linings, being new, are in immaculate unworn and unused condition. There is only very minor wear to the original velvet panel. This is still neatly fitted and it has no splits or fraying.
