This is a stunning high-quality antique jewellery box. It dates to the mid 19th century, circa 1860. The box has exotic Amboyna burl wood veneer and is inlaid with various beautiful fruitwoods. The interior has been beautifully refurbished and the box is complete with its original lock and key.

The Exterior

This box is veneered with exotic Amboyna burl wood which has absolutely beautiful figuration. Further information on this wood can be viewed below.

The lid is profusely inlaid with various fruitwoods which have created a stunning display of stemmed flowers and leaves. There are further beautiful inlays to the corners and to the top and bottom edges of the box. These contrast beautifully against the Amboyna burl wood veneer. All of the inlay is set beautifully flush into the veneer.

There is a lovely inlaid brass escutcheon to the keyhole, also set flush into the veneer.

The box also boasts its original working French lock and its original long piano hinge. This is a quality polished brass stop hinge that holds the lid upright. The original key is also present and this locks the box securely. Further information on the quality French lock can be seen below.

The bottom of the box has a new felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.

The Interior

The interior has been beautifully refurbished by our skilled box restorer.

The storage compartment plus the inside of the lid have beautiful new satin-covered panels. The panel to the base is padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery. The satin is a lovely mid blue shade.

The interior walls of the compartment and the top inside wall of the lid, have beautiful new paper linings. These are high-quality paper linings which are pastel blue with white polka dots. The rest of the walls to the inside of the lid have their original powder blue silk linings. Our restorer has left these in situ as they are still in good condition and are a lovely original feature.

The refurbishment has been beautifully finished with dark blue silk rope trim surrounding the satin panels.

About Amboyna Burl Wood

Amboyna Burl is an exotic wood from the Pterocarpus Indicus genus. Its name derived from Amboyna Island, one of the places the tree can be found. The tree and wood is sometimes referred to as 'Narra' but in Burl form it is known as Amboyna. This wood was much favoured by French box and cabinet makers because of its beautiful appearance.

Details Of The French Lock

This beautiful box has a wonderful French lock which was designed to deter thieves from stealing its contents. It was cleverly designed so that its key could be turned TWICE, to lock/unlock the box. The idea was that an intruder would believe the lock to be faulty when it did not open upon just one turn! The lock can, however, be operated with just one turn if desired.

Condition

This box is in wonderful condition for its age. It has sound structure and only minor light age-related wear.

All of the veneer and inlays are still present and secure.

The box locks securely and the hinge is still in perfect working order.

The interior satin and paper linings, being new, are in excellent clean and unused condition.
